Question Carb recommendation.

Alright, the old Holley 600 is shot. (leaking around throttle shaft) AND, the 650 double pumper spread-bore that my dads friend let us borrow (same problem). So i deffinately need a new carburetor. I was planning getting another Holley 1850 600CFM vacuum secondary either at an upcoming swap meet or off of ebay.

Im somewhat partial to Holley, but i have never worked with anything else... Its going on a '68 327 with no aftermarket upgrades that i know of. If anyone has any suggestions for a new carb, let me know what you think. I was considering an Edelbrock if the Holley didnt work out and even a similar Summit model at one time, but i can see those arent well liked on this forum..
my neighbor recommended a Rochester Q-Jet, but some people also have their problems with those.

So, let me know what you think! im very open to suggestions.

You're asking for suggestions, and opinions. Everyone here has their own likes and dislikes for their own reasons. If you listen to them all, you're going to need to buy at least three different carburetors!
I would suggest staying with what you're familiar with, but only if you liked the Holley to begin with (minus the leak). And the leaking around the worn throttle shaft bushings isn't specific to a Holley either, Quadrajunks are very good at doing that as well. I've got a Q-Jet on an older Vette, and the shafts are sloppier than a cheerleader on a Saturday night! She leaks like sieve (the carb that is)!!

I had poor performance from the Edelbrock I put on my Camaro. Never ran well, and just felt sluggish. I finally went back to a Holley and I love it. Haven't seen one of the new Summit Holley clones, but the prices are sure nice!

IMHO, Holley has a better low end than the Edelbrock.
While you are swapping carbs, check the return spring. Many times I have seen carbs with springs that are way too stiff. This may be the cause of the worn throttle shaft.

If it's the one I'm thinking of they've got a weird design. The body looks like Holley but they disassemble like a carter/edelbrock with the top coming off.

I personally like Holleys better than Edelbrock but both are decent. The throttle response of a Holley and low end power are great.

Hey, thanks for the replys everyone. And to answer a few questions, as soon as I got the car, I changed the throttle spring because it was too LIGHT. It was wraped around the universal alternator bracket and was not even strong enough to bring the idle all the way down (you'd go 27 with your foot off the gas). We noticed the play in the shaft and replaced the spring to compensate the problem (which by the way, also stopped doing the trick recently) with the intention of buying a new carb in a few months time.

And if anyone was wondering, here is the link for the summit carb:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-M08600VS/

It looks alot like a Holley but it assembles different and the fuel inlet is on the opposite side, and as far as I can tell, it looks like they tried to take the best features from a few different brands of carbs.

One last thing. Im not sure if this makes a difference, and im sure if it does, ill look like an idiot, but im pretty sure that the distributor is from the original 79 350 and its is now on the '68 327. it also has an Accel HEI in-cap super coil. we have checked that the cables are in the setup for the HEI and not the breaker point and checked timing at least once after every change weve made. if anyone knows if this is the problem please let me know. Thanks!

Yeah, that's the carb I was talking about that was a kind of weird design...

I don't understand the paragraph I quoted you on above though. Your last sentence mentions a problem but I don't see one in your previous set of posts. Did I miss something? Are you just asking if it's o.k. to go with the HEI setup from the 79?

Yeah, sorry. I guess I should have filled you in first. The original 79 motor is not in may car. Theres a 327 from 68 (according to casting ID) in it and i was just wondering if running an aftermarket Accel HEI cap (with in-cap coil) on the 79's distributor would make any difference. Im only asking because i talked to a mechanic who said that it might causea problem.

From Accel:
"ACCEL Heavy-Duty Caps offer superior protection from ''arc-thru'' & crossfire. Features hi-perf. 60k V-rated alkyd compound, stress-relieved at molding to ensure stability. Brass inserts provide for high spark energy flow.

So, it's a replacement cap, just better than others because they said so!
Basically what they are saying is their compound is better because it resists carbon tracking. Oh, and theirs is stronger than others too, just in case you sit on your distributor I guess. Brass inserts isn't rocket science nor is it unique to their cap.
Using one isn't going to cause any problems. I don't know what the mechanic was referring to (or if he knew either).
