best place to hook up oil pressure gauge on 78 305 sbc
 

i just picked up a mechanical oil pressure gauge, which port is the best to hook it up on the motor? 78 305, many stuff i looked up online say use the port just above the oil filter, i didnt see that port on my 78, was it put in on later years or am i just missing it?

Not sure if the 305 has the port above the oil filter. Best place is rear of the engine behind the intake manifold, driver's side of the distributor. Might take a mirror and laying on top the engine to see the port, but that's the most commonly used place.

i actually found the spot near the oil filter, this old 305 is caked with old oil and stuff, thanks

Before you use the port above the oil filter be sure you have the pressure port! Loosen the plug up and then just snug it hand tight. Start the engine and see if it leaks any oil, if it doesn't loosen it and see if the pressure starts to push oil. This way you'll know before you get it all plumbed in.

Also be sure to use the copper tubing to connect the mechanical gauge. You don't want to use the cheap plastic stuff that usually comes with the gauges, which can get melted, cut, pinched or cracked, then give you a gusher of a leak.

i got the line hooked up to the port above the oil filter, used the cheapo plastic tube for testing, car is in the garage for winter, the gauge gets pressure, and alittle oil came threw the tubing.
