Default 4 barrel carburetor for a 307?

Hi all, I am new to the forum and a quite new owner of a 73 Camaro. It has a 307 CDI engine, automatic transmission and is 100% stock. It was imported into Switzerland 1973 trough the official dealer. I am the second owner, the engine seems untouched, 112 t miles. It runs well, idles well, sounds great. At starting, it does make some oil smoke. But not while running. I love the car, its great fun.

I thought of a mild power increase in fitting a 4 barrel carburetor and the needed manifold. I got an offer from summitracing, see the link. Its a 600 cfm carburetor.

Summit Racing 03-0193 - Summit Racing® Intake Manifold, Carburetor, and Air Cleaner Pro Packs - Overview - SummitRacing.com

Would be good to hear the comments of the more experienced here. Does it really increase the (low- to mid) power? Without any other changes to the engine? Or just increase the consumption..?

Greetings from Switzerland.

A 307 is not a performance engine. If you wish to increase your performance, without a engine rebuild or replacement, I recommend you put on a pair of exhaust headers and good exhaust and also an aluminum intake and 4 barrel carb. Holley makes 390 cfm carb that would be good for your cubic inches. I used to have a 390 on a 283 V8 and it worked great.

Welcome to the forum!
I personally think the 600 would be an excellent choice, and the Summit kit shown is a very good value for the money. I've run 600cfm carbs on fairly stock 283's and they worked great. I would agree that a set of headers and full length duals would add even more to making the kit work even better!
I'd go to the Holley 500cfm 2 barrel and not change anything else if you want to save money, and get a small gain in performance. The 390cfm is a great carb, but extremely overpriced for what you get. They run almost as much as that Summit kit for just the carb!

My first 69 Camaro had a 307. Going from a choked up 2 barrel engine to a 4 barrel, headers, and dual exhaust woke it up a bit.
It's no race engine, but it'll be more fun than the way it is now. At $418 for that kit, I'd jump on it.

Thanks for your comments! I ordered the kit! I will install it and see how it works, price is really interesting. For the moment I think I want to keep it as stock as possible...

That is a sweet looking car you have there. Some minor changes and tunes should hall with performance and fuel mileage as long as you keep your foot off the gas pedal to hard.

What's that on your front fender? It looks like a big robotic cicada.

haha..you are right, it does

It's an adapter to fix extended mirrors. The car was used to tow a trailer (caravan) by the previous owner. By law you have to install this for better back-sight, when towing the trailer. I did not remove them, there are holes in the fender.

Danna na na danna na na na. Its the final count down! (said in my highest pitch voice) Sorry Europe is from Switzerland aren't they? The mirrors and towing crack me up. I see cars here alot that have receivers for a trailer hitch. We had one on my step moms 80 Camaro when I was a kid. I know I have a pick of that car somewhere with a 10ft row boat mounted to the top of the car when we were headed out to go camping as a kid.

As to your question. My 86' 4x4 came with a 305 and a 4 barrel. The Rochester is probably rated at 650cfm or so but the beauty of them is they only flow as much as the engine needs. I am swapping it out for a 600 Holley soon. I was actually going to buy one the other night on a forum. I didn't because I wasn't going to pay $150 for a used carb. I was going to get the Summit kit you linked to but had an intake fall into my lap.

Do it. If anything you will have and intake and carb that will be at home on the next small block. I wouldn't put a 390 on my motor unless it was sitting next to two other 390's. They do sell 500 cfm two barrels if you wanna be different. My buddy has to run on his way overkill 421 because they changed the rules in his class. It still pulls like an animal.
