Default 283?

Well I actually have an '88 Camaro.... and my uncle is GIVING me a 283 out of a '67 Impala
I was wondering if anybody here would know what kind of transmissions were made for this engine? I figured somebody in the classic catagory may know the answer to this.
Also where would be the best place to get a transmission? junkyard or what?
Thanks to whoever helps me
-RJ

You did'nt mention what's in your car now, so I'm guessing, If you currently have a SB or a 4.3 V6 in your car now it will bolt right to the trans you have, there may be some issues with accessory mounting but there's ways around them. The 2.8 and 3.1 have different bell housing bolt patterns which require tranny replacement, I would suggest a 700R4 from the same gen as your car which is probably what you have now if you have an automatic. If it's a manual, then all you need is a bell housing and the correct flywheel and clutch. hope that answers your question.

yea sorry i forgot to mention that
what is in it now is a 2.8L V6 Automatic
Hopefully i'l trying to get an manual tranny for the 283 if possible
The reason i am trying to put the 283 in it is b/c it is free and my grandpa has a huge garage that i can use and within me, my dad, and grandpa, we should be able get it done in a good amount of time during the summer
Thanks for your input

with a 2.8 you're changing tranny's so it's good that you're planning that anyway. I've head of guy's using T56's from late model S10's, but, you'd have to find a 4.3 V6 truck to get the right bell housing. better yet look for a car like your's at the boneyard, maybe you'll find one with a manual in it.

If I read your letter correctly you want to know what was OEM not what you should put in it .With a 283 it would of come with a aluminum powerglide in 67 or a 3 speed if the car was BBC it would have a 4 speed or TH 400

sure the T-5 will you will need to use hyd. linkage though just get the whole bell housing back from that year of camaro and your set except for pedal but there are numerous articles out there that have a template with them for mounting the camaro clutch cyl. to the firewall. By the way all 1st gen small blocks, big blocks, 348/409, straight six,and 4.3 V6 engines use the same traqnny bolt pattern
thats one of the great things about father bowtie. Now if you are looking for a cheap tranny get a saginaw 4 spd out of a vega killer first gear and will hold up fine behind rhat 283

A 283 most likely could have been optioned with a aluminum powerglide. I own a 69 camaro and it has a 307 ( 283 block) and it has a aluminum powerglide. Im not sure about any other transmisions, but im sure that in 67 it could be equipped with a powerglide.
