Default 12 bolt decoding question......

I have a 12 bolt and I am wondering if there is anyway that I can find out exactly what it is out of. The axel tube numbers are as follows: BU 0624G2 E. I have done some research and it looks like the rear end originally came from a 68 camaro or a 68-69 nova. I can't make out the casting date, but it does look like it is from 1968. How do i distinguish whether it is from a camaro or a nova? Then lets say if it is from a camaro, can i find out if it is from a z/28. ss 350, or ss 396? Any information would be a ppreciated.

Default RE: 12 bolt decoding question......

The casting number for the center section is 3894860NF for first gen Camaros. It be easy to find since it's cast into the unit, not stamped. For the 68 Camaro the BU code is for a 3.73 Posi. It's the same for 69. This is from Chevrolet By The Numbers. The casting number is also listed for Chevy II and Nova which lists different ratios for the BU code than Camaro. I'm not sure how you'd tell them apart. You'll need to do a little detective work for that.
