Well, in trying to get ready for HAN it was discovered that my under dash wire harness is a mess. We removed an alarm system (Enforcer ???) and while removing 4 rolls of tape it was found that someone who knew nothing about wiring worked on the car. LOL.

Which wiring harness product to you guys like? Ron Francis or Painless?

I just missed out on a good deal up in Reno at HAN on a Painless, but want to see who's used what and which one they thought was better.

The only change I have so far is a HEI distributor. I "might" go to a 1 wire alt. but don't know yet. And I guess I should go to a small starter?

Anyway, just asking. I'm back - the car didn't make it - started up and sounded amazing (almost) but didn't have enough oil pressure to take the car up with me. So pulling the motor out (again) to check on the pump. UGH!!!

 

I used American Auto Wire harnesses on a 72 El Camino SS. I replaced everything on the car. It was an easy job w/ the AAW harness. And AAW has a tech support line which helped answer a question. The best part about their tech support was that the tech actually spoke English.
My recommendation is AAW.

 

I forgot about AAW - thanks. I'll be checking all 3 out this week and get one ordered.

I'm leaning towards just a good new updated replacement. I don't want to start changing things and having custom harnesses made for a car that's going to be fairly stock (set up wise) for the electrical.
I need to do a little research, but bought a trailer/toy hauler this week and need to get a 5th wheel hitch installed in my truck so I can go pick it up. LOL. AND if that's not enough, my son borrowed my truck while I tried to figure out what was wrong with his 2 cars and now that it's back ... it needs brakes. Probably rotors too. Dang that kid.

 

I've used Painless products on a couple of builds with great success. Haven't tried AAW, but they seem well-reviewed here.

 

CO68 ~ That was going to be my first choice. I was leaning towards Painless vs Ron Francis then the AAW came up and I looked and see they are well liked. I just need something new, clean & easy to install. =)

 

I used an American Autowire Classic Update on my '68 LS3 swap. It was well designed with good diagrams and instructions. Make sure to buy a good crimper for the connections.

 

One gripe I've had with Chevys is starters that don't fit worth beans and having to mess with shims.
I had a Blazer with a 400 small block and turned the stock starter that fit right in for a core and had nothing but trouble with replacements.
Finally had a mechanic friend look at it and he had to do some grinding on the starter to get it to mesh with the ring gear right.
After that experience I'll get the starter that fits rebuilt before I'll use it as a core.
Half the time rebuilds from a parts house are junk anyway so going to a shop that knows what they're doing to have it rebuilt is the way to go for my money.
If you're worried about heat soak from headers you can wrap the headers and or get a blanket /shield for the starter.
