Engine paint removal

Can I use liquid paint remover to remove the paint from an engine block. I'm trying to save money over having to dis-assemble the whole block and having it professionally done. What I was thinking was sealing up the motor and using a combination of the paint remover and wire brushing.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Yes you can. Paint remover, brushing, and power washing will get the job done.
Just duct tape over all the openings (intake, valve cover breather holes, distributor, water pump, dipstick hole) and go to town.

Thanks. I did read on another forum that EZ off oven cleaner works well. May have to stop and get some of that tonight. I'll post pics when I'm done.

Engine paint is tough stuff. (It has to be)
Oven cleaner may remove the grease, but I doubt it will take the paint off. An acid based stripper like "Kleen Strip" will do the job nicely. (If you like the skin on your hands, wear gloves)

i've used oven cleaner before... it takes the paint off... and skin.... and other stuff. I only recommend if you are taking it apart though.

If you are preparing to repaint you will not need to take all the paint off. You will want it very clean and all loose paint removed. As stated the engine paint is tough and the paint that is stuck on the engine will stay there. After cleaning and blow drying and waiting a few days to make sure it is all dry, I believe you could mask and repaint.

Is it best to use a high temp primer before repainting?
