Distributor Ignition Problem
Hey guys - I've run into a road block with my project. I've got an Accel Ignition Coil, and the old school YC 310 HP Distributor. Problem is, I can't seem to figure out how to wire everything up. I got the car with the distributor already on it, and I went to Autozone and bought the coil. The coil has inputs for a (neg) wire, (pos) wire, and the spark plug wire that goes to the distributor itself in the middle of the cap. The distrubitordoesn't seem to have any other wire inputs, except for a wire bolted on underneath a nut on top of a little bulgecanister on the back of the distrbutor. Thats it. I cant figure out what that wire is for, and where the ignition coil is supposed to wire into. Any help would be appreciated. I found a wire that "seems" to run to the starter, and shows a positive charge whenI am trying to turn the car over. The car turns over, but nothing. It turns over really rough, heavy and slow cause it's been sitting, but I can't get it to turn over cause I am not getting any spark. Please help!
OK - So I went to Autozone, bought a new ignition coil, new distrbiutor, new rotor, new cap, new wires and new plugs. But I still can't get any spark!!! Can someone please help me? I think my problem is with how the coil is hooked up. Right now, it is hooked up to the R on the starter, and I have tried adding other connections but I don't know where else to connect to. Where is this resistor wire? How is the coil supposed to hook up? Please help!
Don't know what type coil you have, but if it is a universal type, the NEG (-) is wired to the distributor, the POS (+) is wired to the ignition switchthrough a ballast resitor or a resitor wire.

Hey Pete - thanks for the reply. I got completely fed up with the coil setup and the stock wiring. For some reason, I just could not get spark. So, I dropped $200 and bought the MSD 6AL and the Blaster 2 Coil. Hooked everything up and now I have spark. Spark - but still not running...
Which leads me to my next question - I have spark, but it seems it is not timed right. There is random gunfire like pops when I am trying to start the car. The car will not start, but the popping tells me that I am getting spark. I hooked up the wires exactly the way they were on the old distributor. The new distributor, just a $30 replacement from Autozone, has the spark plug wires installed in the same order (so I think). What would cause this random popping? At least now I have spark, but still not a running car... Thoughts?
Also, since I have the MSD ignition system and coil, I am thinking of upgrading to a better distributor. Any reccomendations would be appreciated.

One thing you may want to do is to check that the distributor is not 180 degree out. Bring the engine to TDC with both valves in the closed position on the #1 cylinder. The rotor on the distributor should point to the #1 plug wire. If it is pointing to the #6 cylinder the timing is 180 out, if it is pointing somewhere else, check that the plug wires are in the right place.
