383 Stroker Timing Question

I've got a 383 stroker in the 68 that I recently purchased. Today was the first day I've had a chance to road test it and there is some hesitation/bog just off idle and seems to be missing or very underpowered under acceleration.

I know it could be several things but I wanted to check the timing and realized that there is no timing pointer to reference the notch on the harmonic balancer.

What are the best options for checking and or adjusting the timing?

Get the bolt on timing tab for a 8 inch balancher and go from their.

Thanks. Simple enough. I didn't realize they were that universal. Any thoughts on where the initial timing should be set? All I know about the engine is that it was originally a 350 4 bolt from a 70's truck before being stroked. 40 over, 202 valves, roller rockers and an Edelbrock 750.

Hard to say what timing should be without cam specs. Once you get the timing tab installed you can start playing with timing settings and advance it until it runs well. After you get it running better, then shut it off and see how it restarts when warmed up. If it starts hard back the timing off slightly until it warm starts easily. Then if it drives well, starts warm easily, check the timing with a light and record it for future tuning.
