Axel bearings
Hello Iam working on my 68 firebird same thing I know this is for Camaro's but my rear axel bearing sticks out of the housing maybe 1/4 to 1/8 of a inch is this how its supposed to be? The axel goes all the way in to where it touches the pinion shaft, its the type that presses on to the axel as Iam sure you all know or should it be flush with the end of the housing did the old one get pressed on incorrectly? Weird question I know but can't really find anything on the internet as far as photos go. thanx

I'm guessing this is a Ford 9in rear axle since the bearing is pressed onto the axle? Or is this a factory c-clip style axle in which the bearing is pressed into the housing?
Either way, the bearing should sit flush or recessed a little. Non c-clip axles have a retention plate bolted to the housing so the bearing would have to sit at least flush for the retention plate to bolt correctly.
C-clip axles the bearing would sit recessed in the axle tube as you would need room for the seal to sit.
Any pics would have help immensely so we can see what you're seeing.

axel bearings
thanx for reply they are non c clip type they have the retention plate like I said the bearing presses unto the axel itself with the axel fully inserted bottomed out touching the pinion shaft the wheel bearing is exposed just about less than1/8 of a inch. Retention plate still goes on good and tight . Is this something to really be concerned about? Try to get a photo to you .Thanx GM
