Which L6 Engine Do I Have?
Just bought a 68 Camaro Standard Coupe with a straight 6 Cylinder and both front emblems are missing from the fenders. If it is a 250, my plans are to rebuild it this Winter. If not, I'm not sure what I am going to do. It is my thoughts that this is the original engine. The Block ID number is: 3921968 The book, "Chevrolet Inline Six-Cylinder Power Manual", by Leo Santucci shows this block being used by both the 250 and 230. Do I have to ID the Block and Crank? Thanks |
RE: Which L6 Engine Do I Have?
If I remember correctly the 67 & 68 used the 230 CI engine (140 HP), and the 69 used the 250 CI engine (155 HP). Same block, different stroke.

RE: Which L6 Engine Do I Have?
Pete, Thanks for the quick reply.
Well I looked a little deeper tonight. On the engine tag (just to the rear of the distributor) I found the following stamped Serial Number. F1108CM I have picked up a Chilton Camaro Repair Manual and in a chart on page 1-19 there is a reference to the Code: "CM" as being a 250 CuIn motor. I believe the Serial number breaksdown as: F= Flint production plant 1108 = Dressing ? CM = 205 with 3 or 4 speed Tranny Does this sound right? My intensions are to rebuild this motor this winter and I was wanting to understand what I have so that I can better plan my build. I am hoping for the 250 and if not, my plans are to convert it to a 250 with a medium build. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

RE: Which L6 Engine Do I Have?
I gave$8500 for it. It runs great and is complete except for 3 chrome emblems and 1 headliner edge trim piece.
Long Story: I ran into a buddy of mine that had just picked up a used Truck that he found on Craigs List. I had never been on Craigs List but had heard a lot about it. The next night I found myself engrossed in all the cool things there. I came across this car that was being held at a local dealer. Went to see it the next day and picked it up. |
RE: Which L6 Engine Do I Have?
Briefly I had a six cylinder 3-spd stick '68 Camaro, my first new car, which I liked alot. It had 250 badges on the front fenders and a 250 ci enginewhich wasan option (a very low cost one, I remember). Basically the dealer had recommended I get the larger six if I was going to have the air conditioning: the salesman claimed the extra 20 ci basically covered the drag of the AC.

RE: Which L6 Engine Do I Have?
And please, restore it and leave it a six. You see gobs of V8s (including more 396s and SSs than I think were ever made back then) at auto shows, but a clean, original six is rare. They were really very sweet cars!!!!
