x pipes, h pipes or straight

Default x pipes, h pipes or straight

im planning on redoing my exhaust for my 68 camaro, but wanted to see what is best....i currently have just straight though pipes from one header to the muffler, but have noticed some people run x pipes and h pipes. i was wondering what the difference was? anybody?

they are designed to equalize back pressure between the two pipes. as to weather x or h is better its up to you. i heard both sides of the coin on each one.

Gearz did a segment on heartthrob exhaust I think and torque/ HP number were better through an H pipe setup than an X setup. Cant remember the exact show but H numbers were better I do remember that.

Just to add, the h will give you a deeper tone than the x. The x has a tendancy to be raspy. I prefer the h pipe.

The real story is that there's very little difference between X, H, or inidividule duals. Some sound difference, and some power, but not enough to really worry about unless you're wringing out every ounce of HP you have.

I think 22 HP is quite a significant increase vs 6 HP. Especially when its something you have to put on anyway like exhaust.

Thanks for that link dynarider, interesting difference between the H and X pipe. I put a Heart Throb 3" chambered muffler full length system on my 69, got it from JC Whitney.
I have the H pipe on the shelf to install later (afterthoughts). Glad I went with the H instead of the X.

But we're talking 22 hp at the top end, varying amounts up to that point. Considering we don't drive our cars much past 3,000 rpm's on a daily basis it's not what I'd call significant gains for daily driving. If I was going racing, then even 5 hp would be something I'd want. Or if it was 22 hp at under 3500 rpm's I'm all onboard with it!
What he doesn't say is was this 22hp over the stock exhaust, or 22hp over his exhaust with X vs. H pipe.

He got a gain 22 hp on his H pipes vs stock and only 6 hp gain on X vs stock. He also said he got 48 hp gain on the dodge challenger with H. There are lots of variances but its something that has to installed anyway. Were not talking $5000 for a supercharger. Even though he may not drive his car over 3500 rpms you can tell a difference when its time to show off a little.
