Default What's my trans worth?

I've got a 68 small block Camaro with a muncie 4 speed trans. Since I'm changing my setup, I'm trying to figure out what my current drivetrain is worth to help with my budgeting.

I'm not sure which Muncie it is, but it is original to the car, and has a sticker on the side from the place that rebuilt it in the 90's.

Since it works fine I was going to sell it to offset my costs...Any thoughts on what its worth? If it helps, I'm in the Chicago area for demographics. Thanks for the feed back!

It would help you to find out which one you have before going to sell it. M21's are selling anywhere between $700-1,000 used. The fact yours is rebuilt is a plus, especially if not a lot of miles have been put on it since.

what are you replaceing it with tremec or auto??
i bought a fresh rebuilt m20 last sumer for my 68 for 900 and threw in my cracked case m20 as a core
i would guess 700-900 depending on condition (internals)
if its an m20 i may be interested?
Also are you changeing the engine as well?

Your going to want to get all the numbers off the tranny. It is worth the most to someone looking to make a numbers correct. M-22 from a 68 would be worth a pretty penny. I think that was the first year for the M-22

For the muncie you will need the casting number, ie, 3925660 and the number of grooves on the shaft to know what it is.

There is no way I would sell it if it was numbers matching to the car, what about the engine does it match also? If so just keep them and save up a little more for your project. Its hard replace once its gone $$$ but cost you nothing just to keep it.

Default trans

Thanks for the replies! I haven't had the time to take it out of the car yet, but when I do, I'll keep you posted.

For those worried about losing the original trans from this car, that may be the only original part on the car. Don't think "restoration", think "resurrection".

I'm saving this car from the worst of all evils, the "mechanic" with no training, education, common sense or automotive knowledge. While I don't profess to know a lot, I know when I don't know, and when to ask for help.

Thanks for the replies, I'll keep you guys posted.

Thread back from the dead!!! I finally got the trans out of the car (life gets in the way) and pulled some info from it:

Casting number - 3885010, and I think the date code is - P7T08
Driver's side of the case - 3884685
10 spline input shaft, 27 spline output shaft

My research leads me to believe that its an M21, and the date code (I think) supports my 68, but the tail shaft says - 3846429, and that's where I get confused.

Also need to know what this thing is worth, since I will be getting it up for sale as soon as I can figure that out.

You still need to first figure which model you have.
The housing casting # means 1965-67.
The tail housing is a 63-65 piece, so that's been changed, apparently to move the speedo from the passenger side (the tail that came on yours) to the drivers side.
P7T08: P=Muncie Plant code, 7=1967, T=December, 08=day.
So that makes it: December 8, 1966 (not 7) for the 67 model year. That supports the casting number dates too.
Read the December date casting part in the "Reading Serial & VIN Numbers" section here, as to why that 7 code doesn't stand for 1967 for the 1968 model year: Muncie 4 Speed Transmissions
Then right above that section it tells you what to look for pertaining to the rings on the input shaft, to determine which model you have.

a m22 is easy to tell without the numbers. they have the big output shaft like a th400
