Default turn signal/brake light issue

hi, i need some help with my turn signal/brake light problem on my 67 camaro. i have an issue with my brake lights not working when i turn on the right side turn signal. everything works as it should when i turn on the left side. a few months ago, the brake lights worked but the right turn signal would not flash when my foot was on the brake. i havnt tried to fix the problem and i dont know why the symptoms have changed from a few months ago. the front turn signal and the signal on the dash have always worked properly. i am in australia and my local auto electrician wasnt intrested in fixing it for me. i dont think he new what the problem is. thanks.

Sounds like you may have a bad ground. Your tail light housings are cast metal, and the sockets get their ground from being attached to the housing. Corrosion between the housing and socket will cause a bad ground. Have someone work the lights the same way, while you twist the socket back and forth and watch what the lights do. If you get nothing, then try jumping a wire from the socket to a good body ground. The light housings get grounded either by being attached to the body, or there's a ground wire to it. You could have bad continuity there too.

thanks for your suggestion camaro 69. i just had a quick look. all earths seem good. i put a car stand in the car so it holds down the brake pedal. i have power to both brake lights, then i lose power to the brake lights when i turn the right blinker on. it seems like the right blinker is cancelling both brake lights instead of cancelling the right side only so it flashes. everything works perfectly when the left turn is on. does anyone have a wiring diagram for this so i can look into it further on the weekend. thanks

I still say you have a poor ground, and your test further points in that direction. The brake lights and turn signal lights are on different circuits. My car has a brown and a yellow wire going to that socket and your coloring might be the same. But, even though they're separate, the one thing they do share is.......yep you guessed it, ground. If one circuit has a weak or broken ground connection, it will find it from somewhere else that's the closest, making that "somewhere else" act strangely, or not at all.
You said "all earths seem good". By "seem" I presume that means you didn't jump a dedicated ground wire from the light socket to a good (tested) body ground source to take the ground out of the equation? You still need to perform that test.

i have just completed your test camaro 69. i ran a wire directly from the negative on the battery to the light bulb housing and there is no change. i did a test at the turn signal switch. the green and yellow wire from the turn signal switch both have power when i push the brake pedal. when i turn the left blinker on with my foot on the brake, the yellow wire flashes and the green wire still has power. when i put the right blinker on with my foot on the brake, the green wire flashes and the yellow wire loses power. the yellow wire gets power again as soon as i turn the right blinker off. this is telling me that there is something wrong with my turn signal switch. do you agree. i will replace it in the coming weeks and let you know if it fixes my problem. thanks

i just went and pulled the turn signal switch apart and cleaned all of the contacts. i found that when i turned the right blinker on, the blinker arm was traveling too far (possably due to wear) and the contacts wern't meeting when it traveled too far. if i turned the blinker on 3/4 of the way, then everything worked perfect. i have limited how far the blinker arm moves and everything seems ok for now. Old hoon, try turning your blinkers on just enough for the blinker to flash and then check your brake light. that will tell you if you have the same problem. thanks for your help camaro 69.

lol. Didn't see that one coming! But then, wouldn't your blinkers be doing that whether or not you're on the brakes?

the blinkers were working ok. it was the left brake light that dropped out when the right blinker was turned on. its all good now and now i dont have to worry about people running into the back of me when i'm turning right because of the brake light being out.
