Tire Size
hey everyone, i realize its a noob question but i just recently got my 69 camaro project. Im just wondering what the largest tire size i can fit without any tubbing. I want a sufficiently fat tire eventually but i need to know if im going to be satisfied with what i can already get or if i need to tub it up. thank you for any help.
David, I just spent some weeks trolling the internet and forums to get the same info for my 68 Camaro. I really wanted some Torq Thrust M's but in the end they would not fit the rear without 1 inch spacers, and that is not a good option. The 69 seems to have a litle more room or tolerance for wider rears, but the following will fit without problems on a stock 69. This is not the only combination, and other members will be able to guide you as well. These figures are for 17 inch wheels, and the tyres listed will ensure your overall wheel height will not vary from the original stock wheel heights.
Front - 17 x 8 rims (4.75 to 5 inch backspacing) 245/45 series tyres 9on 17 inch rim).
Rear - 17 x 9.5 rims (5.5 to 5.75 backspacing) 275/40 series tyres(17 inch rims)
There are plenty of folks who have put larger and wider rims and tyres, especially at the rears, but you will need to consider rubbing, spacer rings and rolling the wheel lip in most cases above the dimensions I wrote. Backspacing is important to position the wheel in the centre of the wheel well and in the largest space available for the wheels.
For info I had to change my choice from American Racing Torq thrust Ms in Anthracite to a set of Foose Legends, in chrome, which is not what I wanted in terms of finish and colour. They will fit perfectly though, and were a reasonable price.
For fat tires, at the rear you will need to tub, and get some 12 inch rims in there. For the front, you can get into clearance trouble with stock fender lips and stock control arms if you go over 8 inches wide on the rims or 245 on the tyres.
Good luck, and dont worry, I am a noob too, coz I dont post much, but I have been working on my 68 for 6 years and now onto my third rebuild. Learned a lot, and have changed my mind about a lot of things too. first rebuild was to get it stock as stock. Result was a car I did not drive much and didnt have much fun. Next rebuild was a right hand drive conversion, new floors, new glass, rack and pinion steering, air conditioning, motor rebuild, march pulley system etc. Now I am going for a major rear end and front end rebuild, and major engine improvements. I want a car I am happy to drive everyday, in any weather, on any road. (and kick a few butts now and then)

David,
Not sure what rim size you are thinking about, but on my 68 I have 15x8.5's with Mickey Thompson ET Street Radials 27"x10.5"x15" (P255/60R15) on the rear with no rubbing or spacing issues at all. I could probably increase the size the next time around....
