Default Some questions....

hey fellas,

I don't know if you've read my "new member" post or not...

but I'm helping a buddy of mine find a 69' camaro. It's either in good project shape, or driveable.

anyway, I got to thinkin, heck, I can help build the motor, paint and the whole shebang! so my question is, what EXACTLY is the difference between the I6 and the V8 'maros ?

my thought process is that this whole time we've been looking for the V8's (of course! ) but I was wondering what would be needed for the conversion?

cause i know that in the stangs you'll need:

new 5-bolt spindles
front coils
upgrade the brakes
drivetrain
engine mounts

and a whole bunch of other stuff

so did the guys at chevy keep the same bolt pattern? or are the I6 models a bunch of 4-bolt stuff too? other than the major stuff, ie. motor mounts and drivetrain, what will be needed for the conversion, and since i KNOW that a bunch of you guys have done the conversion, can i get a modest price quote?

thanks guys,

John

The most important difference is in the body number on the trim tag. The six cyl. cars were 12337 & 12367 and the V8 cars were 12437 & 12467. (http://www.68rscamaro.com/camfacts/68trimplt/). The spindles and sub frames were the same. Just different springs, motor mounts, radiator, etc. Nothing really major. Here are some websites that might help you decide:

Default RE: Some questions....

I just did the I6 - V8 conversion on my 68 Coupe not too difficult or expensive...I dropped in a 350/330 hp crate engine and Turbo 350 trans.

The things I had to change were motor mounts and frame mounts (pretty inexpensive), radiator shroud, power steering hoses, belts and hoses, and other miscellaneous hardware.

The V8 will bolt up to the stock trans (Powerglide),but thepowerglide for the I 6 has less clutches, etc. so i would suggest at least a Turbo 350 trans.I used the original radiator (2 core). The radiator cools OK, but I may upgrade to a better aluminum radiator.

The front springs are 6 or 8 cylinder specific, but I did not change mine and do not plan on it as The car seems to ride better and have a better stance with the added weight.
Brakes, wheel bolt patternand everthing else are the same as a V8 that I am aware of...

Excluding the engine and trans it probably cost me $300 - $400 in mounts, belts, hoses, etc...I also had to modify the shift linkage for the Turbo 350 as the original Powerglide linkage would not work...
