Default How do I get to the neutral safety switch?

[align=left]I have a 67 RS Camaro and the reverse lights are not operational...I am
convinced that it is because of the neutral safety switch but though I
believe that this needs to be replaced I can't seem to reach it. I've loosened the steering column and taken the dash off but the gauges are coming along with it not allowing me to get as far behind the dash to where I believe it is located...what can I do to get past this problem in order to replace it? Any
help or info would be much appreciated...thanks...

a. i dont think the neutral safety switch has anything to do with the reverse lights, the neutral safety switch only allows the car to be started in neutral or park, not in gear. you're looking for the reverse light switch, which should be on the transmission
b. the reverse light switch and the neutral safety switch should not be behind the dash, they should be on the transmission, and also, have you checked the bulbs and fuses for the reverse lights?

I agree with 1985RS, but if you want to get to the neutral-safety switch, there is no need to rip out the dashboard. All you have to do is to assume the inverted driver position, head on floor & legs over the back of the seat. This position has two benefits: it lets you reach the switch, and the blood rushing to your head makes you temporarily smarter. LOL

Thanks for the info guys I really appreciate it...I'm very inexperienced when it comes to fixing cars hence why I thought it was the neutral safety...my bad...I did take the time though to check the bulbs (got new ones) and fuses as well...both of which weren't the problem...I'll check the transmission now and look out for that switch!!!

is this a stock shifter or an aftermarket?

if it is an aftermarket, both switches usually sit side by side under the shifter cover. sometimes they just become loose and out of location. if they never worked, a lot of times people don't even put those switches in (lights and neutral) so I would even check to see if your neutral safety works while your at it
