Power Steering Question

So noticed last couple times I drove my 68 my Power steering started getting jerky and whining a bit and I noticed the bottom return line was leaking, so I filled the tank up in the dark at a gas station... Way over filled! got home and removed the Bottom line cut off the end that was split and put it back on and filled tank back up... again overfilled it by accident, and drove it still was jery and whining and burped up fluid from the cap.. I removed fluid back to full level mark and its not leaking but still jerky...

So my question is does the system need to be bleed? did it get air in the lines when I removed hose?

Don't know a lot about power steering... Not sure if they ever need bleed... or if my Pump is going out... But it was Frame off with all new parts in 2013 and has maybe 2500 miles since Resto... so hard to belive its the pump???

Thoughts...

TIA Michael

Yeam they do go out. Its not unheard of at all. But it sounds highly likely you did get air in the system thru the return line.

Before you do anything drastic try to bleed the system. Get the front wheels off the ground where they are not touching pavement.
With the engine off, turn your wheel 15-20 times lock to lock periodically checking the fluid level. If there is air in the system the fluid level will drop. You dont want it to get too low and ingest more air.
Then start the car and go lock to lock several times (with the wheels still off the ground).
That should bleed the system of any air.

I would like to add to the conversation slightly on a different note. My 67 Camaro has stock p/s and it is very free or feels like its to sensitive while running down the highway. Its like you can't feel the road. Any suggestions if I can fix that. I have heard that if I put a new rack and pinion on it, that may help. Any advice!
Thanks

That's pretty common on 1960's cars, a rack an pinion set up would be a complete steering system conversion.

If you want good road feel you could go with a quick ratio manual box and ditch the power steering for a lot less.
Added benefit of some free horsepower as well.
