I wanted to know how difficult it is to switch the SS grill to a RS grill? I have been wanting to changemy grill b/c I really like the 69 hideawaysand I just wanted to see how hard the job is going to be?

If your car is a true SS, I would leave it alone otherwise you're going to hurt the value.
To convert to an RS is a project. If you want to make it like original, you can get a complete conversion kit at www.classicindustries.com, cost is around a grand for everything. You would have to attach the mounting brackets on the front inner lip of your fenders to bolt the light assemblies to, as well as all the vacuum hookups, headlight switch, different style hood latch mechanism, etc.
If you're trying to pass it off as a real RS, then you'll need to change the tail lights to the RS style, and put the RS reverse lights below the bumper.

 

Thanks for the help...I am not trying to pass it off as a real RS.. The car is a true SS but the motor is not the orginal, It came with a 350 from the factory I put in a 427 b/c when I bought the car it did not have the orginal motor in it. I just really like the way the RS headlights look...I know that the kit is like 1,100 or something I just wanted to know if the kit includes everything that I need for the job. I don't wanna get the kit and realize that I need to buy more parts.

Yeah, the kit has everything you need to convert the front. I too like the RS look better, always have. I plan to eventually convert mine over as well. I'm going to do it with separate parts though, instead of going with the kit. Mostly because I'll be making the headlight doors operate electrically instead of messing with all the vacuum crap. My car is so far from stock, I'm not concerned about originality.

 

When going with an electrical system for the 69, can you use the system from the 67 since it is electric?

 

I've wondered that myself. There are aftermarket electric retro-fit kits out there for the 69, and also instructions on how to DIY. The ones I have seen uses the motors from a Chrysler product, such as from an old LeBaron. It doesn't look that difficult to do, mostly some drilling, cutting, and grinding. Those were probably picked because they are more plentiful and cheap to buy. Other than the more expensive cost of using the 67 Camaro motors, I don't know if they are as easily adaptable. If anyone has messed with it, I would like to know.

And here is someone on fleabay selling the instructions to DIY. I already bought these instructions about a year ago. They're very helpful and can save you a lot of time if you're planning on going this route. The conversion is easily do-able, and relatively cheap if you go with decent used motors.

Yeah that is def. something I would look into b/c the only problem with the RS healight vacuum system is that it is not the most reliable. One works fine the other opens halfway, the system doesn't always work. Electric is def. the way to go.

I do know they make different front fenders for the RS grill and standard grill. Not sure if you could get by with using fenders from a standard grill car or not. Just a thought.

 

The only difference between a standard and RS fender is there are mounting brackets on the inside lip of the RS fender where it meets the grill area. You can buy those brackets in the aftermarket and attach them to a standard fender to convert.

 

If you want to switch it to electric instead of the vacume check out DSE they have a really nice kit for it.
