Light in Dash Problem

Light in Dash Problem
Hey everyone have a little problem with a light in my dash. I am sure that someone will have had this problem. When I am driving at night and have my headlights on the generator light will come on and stay on and my headlight will dim. Now I don't have a generator I have an alternator. It is not a one wire alternator just wondering if getting a one wire alternator will fix my problem. Don't know that is why I have come here for all of yall's great advice. Thanks for the help.

RE: Light in Dash Problem
the "generator" light is still hooked up the same wether it is a generator or and alternator. a one wire alternator doesn't help with this problem that you describe. a one wire is just used to simplify things when doing a new wiring job, but if you already have a regular alternator there is no reason for you to change. sometimes a regular alt will even work as a single wire if the RPMs get high enough and the field will still be strong enough to charge it
does this problem change as RPMs change? what is your alternator rated at? how old is your alternator?
people also have problems they have a hard time chasing down sometimes because they buy chrome alternators and they can't get a good ground

No the problem dosen't change when the RPM's change. But you have sparked something I looked at the rating on the alternator and the only thing I could find was 45A that was stamped on the top of it. There was other things stamped on there like 12V and some other numbers probably model and such. 45 Amps sounded really low like something you might find on a 6 cylinder or something. Actually didn't know they made one that small. Not really sure how old the alternator is. Think I should replace the alternator maybe with a 100 Amp rating or something like that. What do you think?
