Identifying a 68 Camaro
 

68 Camaro, no engine, trans or emblems on the body, and most of the interior is gone. Body, frame and what's left of the interior of the car are rust free and not in bad shape.

This car was, according to the owner, an SS big block. How do I find out if this car was truly an SS Camaro? The vin 124378Nxxxxxx only tells me it is a 1-Chevrolet, 2-Camaro, 4-8 cylinder, 37 Coupe, 8-model year & N-built at Norwood, Ohio Assembly Plant. Are there numbers somewhere else on the body/frame that would tell me if this car was truly an SS?

Nothing on the VIN or trim tag to determine if it's an SS or not.
The only way to prove what it is/was is to have the original paperwork, the build sheet, or the numbers matching engine.
Without that, saying it was an SS is just an assumption.

Yeah the 68 trim tags are completely useless. Of there is some chassis stuff still there look for a proportioning valve on the driver side of the subframe that would indicate a 12 bolt rear end from the factory and usually that is a sign of a ss car. As to being a factory big block that's impossible to tell unless there is paperwork or the original motor.
