HELP: Generator Lite on with Key Out/Engine Off
I'm new to the site and have heard great things about it - hopefully someone can help me out. Just the other day I parked my zapper (original 302) and turned the engine off only to have the generator lite stay on. I did some preliminary invetigating and found the voltage regulator energized. When I un-plugged the wiring harness from the alternator/generator the regulator de-energized and generator lite went out. Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks in advance for your help. |
Yeah, sounds like your voltage regulator may be shorting out, or maybe it has a bad ground. I would start by cleaning the ground/mounting screws and the radiator core support where it's attached, then see if that clears it up. You can also try cleaning the contacts inside the regulator. Otherwise a new one should do the trick.

It may be the positive diodes in the alt are bad. Disconnect the alt wires and see if the lite goes out. If it does the alt is probably bad.

Thanks for the great advise. I'll check the voltage reg and alt today, and let you know what I find out.
