Good Shocks for a 1968 camaro
I am putting together my 68 camaro. Trying to pick some good shocks. The car will have a 454 in it. Does anyone know about those spiral shocks you can get? I want my car to look more original, but I do not want a bunch of junk. Would rather have something that works well than an exact reproduction.
I was told to get a good gas shock for the fronts, are the spiral shocks alright to use or will I have problems?

Not familiar with the spiral shocks, but I agree with using gas shocks. I would not run them only on the front, but on all 4 corners. Shouldn't mix brands or types of shocks. Use gas all the way.
Thanks for the help. I seem to find it hard to get info on those spiral shocks. the place selling them seems to think it is a good shock, but I got the feeling he did not know much about the shocks. I hear alot about the KYB shocks, then some will say the ride is too stiff.
KYB's come in different rates, so you can buy them softer for mostly street. They are not that badly priced at around $35-$40. I personally think the Gabriel Max gas shocks are a fantastic bargain for what you get at an affordable price. They're a little more at around $40-$45, but a really great shock.
Those spiral shaped shocks were factory equipment on early Chevys, but I'm not certain they were still used by the late 60's? Nothing really special about them. I think the design was supposed to give the shock body more strength by forming the spiral shape into the body.
You can find them at places that sell repro parts for Chevrolets, but they're expensive at around $100 ea., and not nearly as good as a quality replacement shock. But if you're looking for a 100% original look, then you might want to pay that if you have a 1955-64 Chevy.

edit: Guess they do make spiral replacements for Camaros. Found some here:

Thanks for the advice. I kind of like the more bare bones stock looking shocks. I think I am now torn between the AC Delco Gas shock or the KYB gas shocks. Plus i see you can buy gray paint to paint them to look more stock like the original. Anyone know what is the better shock of those 2? The car is a big block 454 and I bought the big block springs for it. I mainly drive the back roads, some highway. Not sure if I am overthinking this whole thing.
Since your car will have a 454 it wont have a stock look, but you could buy a great set of gas shocks and just paint them to the stock color without having to go with spendy stock repop shocks.
