on 68 a they moved the ss or rs emblems to rear of the front fender. 67 is the only year the ss or rs was on the very front of the front fender and the only year they emblems are in lower case. also 1968 rs cars emblems on the fenders spelled out rally sport. my car has a muncie trans. i know alot of the l30 cars came with saginaws but mine is a muncie and it has never been out of the car since it was put in back in 1968

Leave the poor boy alone. If he has the only 68 SS327 in the world then it must be worth a fortune.

Your Muncie transmission is possible due to the saginaw failures back in the day. So at one time your car did have a Saginaw manual 4sp. As for the emblems A previous owner assumed it was an SS car. If your interested in keeping the L30 M20 as close as you can It is recommended in removing the SS emblems. Since you dont have a 350 motor installed.

Really the L30 M20 is the "Thinking Mans" SS camaro.

Glad to see you are keeping your 68 in good shape, as well as keeping all the original parts.

The most significant difference was that L48/M20 received the higher-load-capacity, aluminum-case Muncie transmission. The L30/M20 was supplied with a slightly upgraded Saginaw iron-case 4-speed transmission, but even with the upgrade the Saginaw was inadequate for the task, as evidenced by the high mortality rate of the Saginaw 4-speed when matched to the L30. Relatively few of the L30/M20 Saginaws have survived the years; many have been replaced with the smoother shifting Muncie.
M20 was not the name of the transmission but rather was the functional designation for any standard ratio 4-speed manually-shifted transmission. Chevrolet yoked the 1967-68 L30 to the less-than-desirable cast-iron-bodied Saginaw 4-speed, heavier by some 14 lbs than the higher-quality aluminum-bodied Muncie 4-speed11 that was placed behind the L48

i dont think it never had a saginaw in it because nothing on the car has been apart. the drive line show no signs of being out the car and i can still make out some of the orginal markings on it. last week i just changed the shocks and it still had the original shocks and when i looked at the rest of the steering arws and connecting rods they are all original. the bushings and ball joints are original because they still have the factory rivits and are covered with a lot of old road grime and undercoating. the back is the same way in originality. i want the ss emblems on the car because it has all of the same stuff so its basically an ss car. i also love the ss hood iver the flat hood and i will never paint it back to factory colors i hate the color combo it was.

It is obvious you like your car just as it is. You should not let anyone talk you into changing anything. What is most important is that you have it the way that makes you happy when you drive it. It's your car! If they don't like something about it who cares? It is your car! I'm painting my rear light panel satin black, because I like the look, even though my car is a small block car. Also, how many of them have put cowl induction hoods on their cars, even though it only came on the 69. Heck, I have a 68 Yenko hood on my 67, just because it is what I wanted. Do what makes YOU happy when YOU drive down the road. That is all that matters any way!!!
Besides after looking at your pictures one last time, I am sure you knew all of this going in. I think we have been played to get something to validate your car. If not, Why does your engine have 350 stickers all over it? Somewhere alont the road, you or someone knew it had to have an SS to be a real SS, but the body already had 327 emblems, or you forgot to change them.

Just be happy with what ever it is that you have. Drive the car and enjoy it as a nice Camaro. That is all it ever will be.

The L30 motor was only 275 HP? No first gen camaro had a 350HP 327.

If your asking about "L30 M20" then your venturing into a area hobbist look for details as well as "proof is in the pudding".

If your just wanting to enjoy the car by all means do to it as it makes you enjoy it.

You happen to ask details about that specific car thats why others have been giving you comments back, as well as website information.

As you stated keep the original parts in a box and make yourself your car. If and when you sell it, then come for the "background" on the L30 M20.

So as you get the value you want for the car as a L30 M20 not just a plain jane camaro with Mod's.

good luck and nice car...

yes the l30 was a 275 hp motor and mine is a factory 275 hp motor. i put the 350hp cam and z28 intake on it to have a little more performace but still look original i have the stock cam and lifters still in a box and they are in great shape along with the iron maifold and quadrajet.
