Default Con firming my camaro a an original L30/M20 car

i have a 1968 camaro rs/ss. it has the original #'s matching 327/275 hp motor, along with the orginal M20 4speed and 12 bolt rear end. the car also has alot of other options including factory front disks brakes, ps, pb, fatory tilt column and woodgrain wheel. has delux interior and rear window defogger. i have heard about the "phantom" ss cars with 327's in them is my car one of them?

Hey, very nice looking car. I like the color too!
If by "phantom" you mean nonexistent, then yes that's what you have. There's no such animal as a 327 SS car. The confusion starts because a lot of the options that were available as "SS 350" options, were also available with the 327 model. Someone along the line checked your car over, looked at the options, and said "gee, I must have an SS". And then put SS badges on it.
If you know for a fact that your engine is a matching numbers 327, then the car isn't an SS.

I had heard of the L30 as the poor mans SS (some used to say a thinking man's SS). You could get the L30 with 12 bolt for about half that cost of the SS package. A lot of salesman used to push that config. There is a following for a well optioned L30 RS. Those SS emblems are in the wrong place anyway I would just get ride of them.

thanks for the info . i know the car is not a true ss but it had everything ss when i bought it and its all orginal stuff the hood is original and everything else ss. it had the iron manifold and quadrajet on it but i took it off and kept it and put on a factory GM aluminum intake off of a 68 Z/28 and a edelbrock carb. and put a GM 350 hp cam in it. other than that its all orginal and i kept everything i pulled off to put back

after a lot of research i'm very confident that my camaro is a real L30/M20 camaro. if you look at this link http://www.camaros.org/l30m20.shtml and read it. my camaro has the factory 12 bolt multi leaf springs and it has the little proportining valve under the drivers door. also have the quick ratio steering box and bigger factory sway bar up front. it also had the factory single exaust but i put stock z/28 duals on it. i will have pics up when i have more time, and i dont care most people say . i believe that chevy did make a few ss camaros with 327s in them because you could order a camaro from the factory painted a pontiac color.

I would think that if an SS was ordered from the factory with a 327 it would have been a downgrade and the dealership wouldnt be able to do it, just an opinion.

not really i think the 327 is a better notor than the 350 and the just because they rated the 327 at 275 hp and the 350 at 295 that the 327 would be a downgrade but really the 327 is kinda like a 302 the are more hp in the higer rpms than most people think and the 327 can run alot stronger than the 350 in my opinion
