Default Check you V.I.N.'s Protecto-Plate Found

Well it could be somebody's lucky day, I've owned/own a 67 SS/RS for the last 25 years. I finally decided to sit down and organize my 3 over-stuffed folders of receipts etc. I have gathered over the years.

While organizing the paperwork I found an unopened envelope that I had received with the original owners paperwork. I opened it and low and behold it's a mint condition Protecto-O-Plate. The Plate is still attached to original Chevy paperwork. This plate does not belong to my car and I am wondering if I should post the full VIN here or if that might be a no-no. If the car has survived I would love to reunite the P.O.P. with the owner.

Tried Carfax and DMV for VIN searches to find the car this Protecto goes with but they all run post-81 17 digit vins. Found another DMV search site, but I don't want to pay $25.00 just to find out the car was totalled in 1974.

So here is a partial 124377L1042XX, So we know a couple of things about the car V-8, 327, L.A., Couple. Could be an R/S, could be a plain Jane. The card does have that old school crush labeling tape noting Golden State Auto Leasing out of Los Angeles.

I got mine, so it's not for my car! I've still got the POP, warranty papers, build sheet, manual, window sticker and pre-deleivery check sheet!

124377l1042xx = 1967
It would be neat to have one, even if it didn't match.

I found a decode site and this is what I got.

Black Interior Mountain Green Sports Coupe 327 Rochester Carb
Van Nuys - 9-20-66 327/210 two-barrel with PG and A.I.R. PW? 09-20-66 Chevrolet Gear and Axle September 1966
Toledo Powerglide (1967)???? Power Steering Only U63 Am Radio

There were a couple of codes that didn't exactly match-up, hence the ?'s.

I was thinking of tapping a car dealership since they run VIN's all the time, but I recently moved and don't have any contacts locally. I read somewhere that you can make a request thru DMV for $10.00.

It would be pretty cool to call somebody up and say, "Hey, I got your Protecto-Plate and it's in mint condition."

If somebody called me and said that, the next question would be How Much?
