Brand new AGR steering box leaking

I just bought an AGR fast-ratio steering box from Summit, installed it in my 67 with new lines, new pump, etc. I bled the system as described in the AGR install docs.

Now, the steering box weeps a bit of fluid out of the top between the casing and lock-ring that goes around the input shaft. It doesn't leak alot, just enough to make a small puddle on the floor and spit PS fluid around while driving and mucking up the underside of the frame/body.

I've talked with AGR about this, and they are willing to take it back and do the repair for free, but I have an issue with this:

1. The box is going to be really tough to remove. I have about 1/4 inch between the header and steering box casing, and the pipe curve around the lower/front portion of the box, making it necessary to move the box rearward before it could drop out. I really don't want to remove the headers to pull the box.

2. Even if I get the box out, it'll take a few weeks and probably $100 or more in shipping costs to get it fixed.

So the above factors make we wonder if I could pull the lock ring and access/repair o-rings with the box still in the car? Has anyone done this or heard of it being done?

It seems possible to do if I remove the steering column from inside the car, and unbolt the steering coupler from the steering box.

Only problem is, once you tamper with it, and maybe it still leaks when you're done, the company isn't going to cover it. Aren't they going to foot the bill for the shipping? They certainly should, the defect is theirs. And if you beech and moan enough, you may get them to send the replacement first. The rest of it (r & r) just sucks.

You make a good point. Ugh. I think I'll go talk with Summit and see what they'll do for me. I bought it over a year ago, so may not help, but you never know.

OK, good news. Talked with Garry at Summit, and he's gonna 'make it right'. They are shipping me a replacement, and a return label for the defective box.

Let me tell ya guys, if you can find it on Summit, BUY it there. These guys have given amazing customer service, and they've got a customer for life. :-)

Good to hear. I've had nothing but good service from Summit as well.

Good to hear, what box did you get? I'm in the market myself.
