I'm just trying to learn about a car's engine, transmission, and other things that will help me with restoring a car. I hope to start a project before too long, but I don't know anything about cars or restoration, so I want to learn.

I would start with a chiltons manual. You will also be able to gain alot of info right here on these forums.

Yeah! Call Blade.

Seriously, find some manuals at the Library too. It's cheaper. PAW has some books and videos as so does other big suppliers. I always learn easier with video. Do any of you friends know how to work on cars? Your dad? Their dads?

I learned it from my dad. Then I worked a lot with friends during high school and college. In college I got a job for a car restoration shop. It was awesome! I learn so much about cars in that one year than I did all through school. I also read a lot of HOT ROD magazines for the the detailed articles.

Let me warn you now. If you read those Chilton's books, be prepared to be left in the dark. They're great for explaining how to disassemble something and then simply tell you to do it in reverse to put it back together. They scatter the specifications all around the book and don't have any wiring diagrams. Course, I have used one in 15 years, so maybe they've improved.

HP makes some good restoration and how-to books. you can also look on anyone of the top restoration houses websites because they are loaded with resto books too

cplthomas suggested Chiltons but, in my eyes, that would not really give you too much help. Chiltons is more for general repairs and completely stock cars. you really want something that is going to address an old car, with old car situations and problems
