Default Black or Silver Grill, rhyme or reason?

Well, been working on some details on my 69 Camaro, and I am a bit confused on why some grills were silver and some were black. I am fairly sure I haven't seen a factory SS grill that was silver, yet non SS cars seem to have both? Can someone explain what the factory typically produced?

it just seemed that some of the most basic of cars had a silver grill and most of the COPOs had them

X2, thanks for the info on that. I did not know that was the specific reason.

Thanks all. I appreciate you clearing that up.

With all that said. Were any SS427 Camaros ever produced in 1969? I am probably going to go ahead and hang SS badges on my car, even though most likely ever "EXPERT" in the country are going to come up to me at cruise-ins and shows and tell me that my car isn't a real SS, or even a real V8 car. I will have some type of reply for them by that time. However, I am trying to figure out how to badge my front fenders. I really don't want to advertise locally that it will have a 5 speed, or a 502. (Gotta keep something up my sleeve). I thought about not badging as an SS and keeping it looking COPO-ish, but then everyone will suspect much more. I actually have considered putting 350 emblems on it as well. More than likely I will use either 396 or 427 though.

Not sure about the 427 SS packages but there is a all white 69 with a 427 one town up from me. They guys Camaro is a twin of mine, all plain, no badgeing with just a cowl hood.

For those that nitpick, ask them where is their car. Then tell them it looks awesome and they should go back over to it so everyone that nitpicks it can be corrected properly.

For those that don't have one, tell them to get their wallet out and write the check so you can build it proper.

Sounds like a badass package your building. I went similar with a "speak softly and carry a big stick" idea but word is out now. That and it's loud as heck.

There were some SS427 Camaros in 69, I'm not sure if there were any from the factory, but at least a couple of the HiPo dealers (like Baldwin/Motion, Nickey, Yenko) did some SS427 versions. There were also 69 ZL1 Camaros built at the factory in '69 using the aluminum block with cast iron cylinder liners and aluminum heads.

Well, broke down and ordered the SS emblems, and my wife talked me into putting the 502 Badges on it. She keeps saying if the factory built what I am building, they would put them on....sobeit, they will be on it.

Still gonna hide the 5 speed though.

Well, bought the silver, gonna keep the black as well. Can change them out from time to time. Actually purchased the Cowl hood too, and gonna have both hoods painted and decide later. Pretty much headed toward the COPO 502 Look. I have a set of SS wheels for driving, but will most likely purchase a set of steel 15" wheels and dog-dishes for a set of Goodyear Polyglass GT's in the future for car shows.
