Wonder why they converted it? You have easy access to both short and long style pumps nowadays.

Was wondering that too. One reason could be with the long water pump, the fan blade is easier to get closer to the radiator without using a long spacer, which can cause premature bearing wear. Closer is better.

I can still remember the days of using a short pump and having that 3" fan spacer to put that flex fan closer to the shroud and wondering how long it will take for the bearing goes out...

Good old days!

Here are 2 pics. The back if the pump is actually closer to the timing chain cover than I thought. Is this still looking like a long pump?

That's a long pump because:
1) It has webbing on the snout (short pump is smooth)
2) Can fit a skinny finger between the back side and timing cover (short pump is literally up against the cover)
3) The alternator is on the passenger side

Awesome- thanks again for the input! I'm picking up the new one tomorrow, painting it in the basement and installing this weekend.

Yeah, what 69 Camaro said....

Clean looking motor.

Boy do my fingers remember the days of those flex fans.
They look good, cool good and cut good!

Is there a chance the pump could lock up with the bad bearing? Looks like I can't install it until Sunday and I was planning to take the Camaro to an event Saturday morning. Is there any chance of complete failure on the pump and leaving me with no coolant circulation?

How bad is it weeping out the hole and how far is it to your event?

Personally, I would replace the pump first. The last thing you want to do is have the pump go out and over heat the motor which could cause more damage.

But if you DO decide to go, take plenty of extra coolant and keep an eye on your temperature gauge.

When running at full op temp, a drip comes out every minute or so. The event is 30 miles round trip however, if there's even a chance of it failing, I'll leave the Camaro home... definitely not worth overheating.

Thanks for the input and help guys- you always pull through with helpful and honest advice.
