Hey Cplthomas,
Yep,I have a buddy who has been helping me that knows more than I and he mis-spoke when saying "build number". The numbers given are actually the engine code and partial vin. I also have the trim tag and casting. The suffix number in the partial vin, according to
www.chevy-camaro.com, says the following"
JQ 1969 396 265 Chevrolet
The castingnumber, according to the same site, indicates the following:
3955272: 1969 396/402 2/4 Camaro, Chevelle, Chevy II, passenger
Combined with the Vin# I know I have a 1968 coupthat came with a V8,manufactured at the Van Nuys plant, without the original engine in it.
So the same question- How can I find out if my car was originally a 396?
I believe a base Camaro could be bought with a V8, but a SS/RS would not come with a V6?However I can't tell if my car was actually a SS, or simply a base Camaro with a V8 engine. I guess without theactual build sheet there is no way to tell?
We will be removing the rear seat in hopes of finding a Build Sheet. I am not sure of the odds of actually stil having that, but I am interested; Has anyone ever found the actual Build Sheet on this site?
Thanks, again, for all of your help!
Rob

What does the trim tag look like? is there a code in the lower left?
Base Camaro could be a V6 or V8, SS or Z28 (or any variation of the two) was always V8, theoratically there could be a V6 RS as the RS was only a trim option, but I doubt it. Your trim tag will tell us how many cylinders your car came with.
I havent heard of anyone finding a build sheet under the seat - but theres always a first time for everything.

Yes- I do have the trim, and the Vin, which is howI figured out the car was a 68, coup, v8 engine, Ash Gold etc. The Casting#, along with suffix JQetc, let us know that we havethe aforementionedengine from 1969...so we also know that wedo not have the original engine.
Are you saying that the trim will let me know if I had a 396 originallyetc?

No, The trim tag will tell you if it were a V6 or V8. There may be an 'x' code which will give a bit more specific info, so what it has can be important. Also the trim tag 'vin' and the actual vin will be different. Can you type what the trim tag says, as it apears?
Unless you have either the 'broadcast' sheet, build sheet or protect-o-plate you might never know what your car was origionally built with.

Kona, good luck with the search, I truly hope you find what you are looking for. let us know and post the trim info when you get a chance.
O, thanks for the compliment, glad I could help...knowledge is power. I thought you would know most of this stuff what with your project...which is coming along very nicely by the way.
Kona, before I forget, front disc brakes are a good sign, SS had them stock.
