69 Identification
Hi All
Just purchased a 69 Camaro, owner has told me that it is a numbers matching 6cyl auto RS car.
Is there any way to verify this, or find out how many 6cyl cars received the RS option?
If this a rare car I will leave it alone if not the 6cyl has to go!
Thanks

To start with if it is a 6 cyl, no doubt it is, the body VIN will start with 12337. I do not know where the engine stamp is on a 6 cyl but the last 6 digits should match the VIN on the car if it is numbers matching. As far as RS or not there is no stamp on the trim tag that will tell you that. If the car has never been taken apart sometimes you can find the build sheet. It could be under the seats, behind the door panel, under the gas tank, wherever the final assembler felt like putting it in if they did at all. The build sheet will give you a list of options includung Z21 and Z22 for an RS car. The car should also have all the exterior trim if it is an RS.

The engine code and partial VIN is on a pad on the passenger side of the block, above the fuel pump, and towards the back of the distributor. If yours is numbers matching, I would definitely keep it. Whether you want to upgrade to a V8 or not is up to you, but still hang on to the original 6 banger if you do.
As far as the RS option, there is no database that I'm aware of that distinguishes between how many 6 or 8 cyl. cars got it. There were 37,773 RS models in total for 69.

did they make a rs car with a 6? every original rs car i have seen always had at least the base v8 either the 210hp 327 or the 307 never have seen a 6 banger rs car.

Yep, they sure did. The RS package was an appearance package, not a performance package, and was available with any engine option. Nowadays (due to V8 transplants) it's rare to even see a plain jane 6 banger car, let alone an RS.
