Default 68 Camaro SS Barn Find Value Help Needed

If there isn’t any documentation doesn’t mean there isn’t any value. I have a numbers matching RS/SS with a/c, am/fm radio, Custom deluxe interior, etc. I did a rotisserie frame off restoration and it has been appraised. Then I see a plain Jane or SS Camaro that someone put disc brakes, all new suspension, fuel injection, overdrive, aftermarket wheels and custom interior with CD players and all the modern items, cruise, vintage air, you know a turn key car bring 85-100k. Times are different I’m afraid. People want an old car that drives and rides like a new one.

True but often that much was spent on those cars,the thing is now the future is pretty uncertain with a 20% unemployment rate looming and uncertainty as to when if ever things get booming again like they were a few short months ago.
I'd be pretty nervous about spending a lot on a resto right now or even investing in a completed car as the market could tank and stay that way a long time.

Didn't the 375 hp SS come with the muncie M22? If it has the numbers matching M22 in there It defiantly be restored. Maybe by someone else..

FYI getting a number matching block is not that big of a deal. In fact the original GM stamping machine was salvages and was up and running back in the early 90s. You can find a numbers correct casting and deck it and have it re-stamped. There are also other ways to do it. Heck a good welder can even change the casting number. It is not fraud as long as you disclose what you did to a buyer. You sure don’t need to tell a judge at a show. Yes it raises the value because a car that can show as numbers matching is worth more than one that cannot. Add in any old proof that this car was a true SS and you have a car that should be done by someone. You know how long it takes to find a SS number matching car/rear/trans. People spend a lot of money getting to that point. Course you have to find the right buyer. A true show person

The M21 was the standard 4 speed behind the L78, the M22 was optional. The L89 option (aluminum heads) was available on the L78 in 1968. 272 were ordered in 1968.

Hell I will give ya 5G for the car, my son is looking for one. Please don't part it out, it still has a lot of potential and the parts are available. I do like the back seat gas tank though lol.


P.S. My dad put the same steering wheel wrap on his/my 68 Camaro. I still have it on there.

car has "power drum" brakes...I thought SS came front disc only

IMHO unless one does his own body, paint, mechanicals this car will cost way more than it will ever be worth and even still that person may be upside down on $

Way to many done cars to buy for less than $.50 on the $ invested to restore them

Unfortunately in 68, it was a bit confusing as to how Chevy optioned the SS - the Z27 SS package didn't appear until 69 which when checked off, included Power Front Discs, etc. For 68, it was very possible not to add the J52 option when ordering SS.

From what I understand, the SS option for 68 included : Special Hood; Black accented Grill and ornaments; front accent band (stripe); hood insulation; special red stripe tires; special suspension; bright engine accents; SS emblems on fenders, grill and fuel cap. No indication of including front disc brakes.

imo, 'done cars' these days seem to be an owner's own interpretation. I've seen so many hack jobs that sellers what big $$ for , jmo.

yeah I see on CRG that "items not required for any 68 model" sayItems not required from the factory for any 1968 model included:
  • Disk brakes/Rally wheels (except Z28)
Yes "done" cars is a broad term....but my point is for $25-$30k you can get a very good driver quality BB/stick 1st gen. It will cost considerably more than that $ to bring the 68 posted back to "driver" quality

Now are many of these driver quality aka "done" cars "real" SS let alone BB SS cars...no. They were born 6 cyl or SBC coupes and branded as whatever
