Default 68 breaklight problem

Just bought the car so I have no background info but all the lights work fine till I hit the breaks then the right light goes off. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Check bulb?
The bulb is a dual filament, one for taillight, one for turn signal and brake.
Dark green is right rear light, check same color at steering column connector for power.

By your description, you know the brake light system works because you do not say drvr side is out. Brake power from fuse panel to brake switch to steering column through turn signal switch, then out to bulbs. There is also a body harness connector behind the drvr kick panel.

To troubleshoot the rear bulb circuit, you can use emergency flashers to check for power at socket and at steering column connector, different source of power, but same wires used.
If flashers work the rear bulbs, then the turn signal switch is bad - giggle handle?

Take a look at the bulb sockets. I had/have the same issue with my 68. My problem was that someone put in replacement sockets in but they were longer than the factory and the brass contacts would speratically connect and work right. A little bump would take them out. I got lucky at a swap meet and found a nice original rear harness with nice ends so went that route and fixed the problem. Is your car a rs? That was the big pain getting all four lights to work right.

That's the sign of a bad ground. My 69 tail light housings are plastic, and the wiring for the lights have separate ground wires. But your tail light housings are pot metal, and them being screwed to the body is what gives the attached light sockets their ground.
My brother has a (wrong year) 68 Camaro, and his one tail light was doing the same thing. Cleaning the light socket tabs (not rusty) and the hole in the housing still didn't help much. We finally got to the "oh screw it" point, and ran it's own ground wire from that socket to the tail light housing mounting nut on the body. Good ground, good lights.

I agree that it is a ground problem because I changed the socket and bulb today. I also bought a new blinker switch and hooked it up under the dash without breaking down the colum and that didn't work either. Tomorrow I will be running a new ground but where do I attach the ground on the socket?

We just held the bare end of the wire against the housing so that it would get sandwiched between the housing and socket when you twist it on.
