'67 won't idle: help

Hi,

I have a '67 camaro with a 350. It has sit for about a year and when I got it going again it was having trouble idling for about a week. It then cleared up. Yesterday it started again.

If it does idle it will idle around 300 rpm, barely running. If I'm at a stoplight (it's a 4 speed) I put it in neutral and try to rev it up but it won't stay at a constant RPM. It will rise and fall. If I'm going through a parking lot in 1st gear very slowly with my foot at a constant rate it wants to lurch (looking like i'm trying to run over people).

While I'm driving down the road there are small hesitations. I guess you might call it a sputter.

If I floor it it will go fine. I feel it has something to do with the fuel. I have a picture of the inline glass fuel filter I can upload if that would help. I feel there isn't enough gas in it at times but I'm not sure.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Brandon

Check the vacumn hose going into the distributer. I would also spray carburator cleaner and clean those jets inside. If the car was sitting for a long period of time, you may also be dealing with bad gas.

also check your plugs wires cap and rotor to make sure your getting a good consistant spark

I say it's the carb and bad gas... Run all the bad gas out of it till it's fresh again, replace fuel filters. Then get your carb rebuilt. I thought my edelbrock and 350 was running fine. I rebuilt the carb for 130 and holly smokes it's like a woke up the beast. It runs way better and pulls way harder.

If you still have the old points & condenser ignition, check your dwell. The points could be burned, corroded, or not opening and closing much if the wiper is worn.

Thanks for the responses. One more question: It has HEI and a vacuum advance but it does not seem to turn the distributor. Is an HEI supposed to physically turn or is that internal on an HEI?

Thanks,
Brandon
