just purchased car.fuel tank was replaced. problem is instrument fuel gauge needle points to 3pm at all times with ignition off or on position...I see a new ground wire attached to under body..but this auto has alot of under carriage rust, would u expect a bad ground ? why does needle point to 3pm position and not to E (empty) ? I know i have 5gals in the tank i poured it in by can.

I would first check to see if there is power going to the gage in the dash. if that was good, I would drop the tank and see how it looks on that end.
if your car has a lot of rust in the tank area and you know there is 5 gallons in there (just because of the weight factor)I might drop the tank first

ok. I grounded to batt terminal and looked under dash behind fuel instrument gauge and see two threaded prongs but no wiring to instrument. what shoud i be looking for???? color etc. or a connector i see none..can the back of theinstrument be removed by the 4 screws on front facial plate ???? I believe the wires where disconnected when installing tank ? and not reconnected..But can not find them. The car seems to be all original and not tampered with.

I'm really not too familar with the dash and wiring in your specific car so all I would be doing is taking educated guesses and could possibly tell you the wrong thing and I'm not going to do that. sorry
