4 speed noise

Default 4 speed noise

When I put the 4 speed in during the summer i hear a metal to metal noise only in reverse so am thinking it has to be the reverse gear what are your guys thought before I pull it out, thanks

what kind of noise? a grinding, tapping, whining?

IMO I would drain her out and just take a look at the lube and probe with a magnet. Can't hurt anything. You will see whats going on in there.

It's going to be a whine as gear teeth are meshing.
If it sounds like somebody wading up foil, then yes, could be needle bearings shot or the bushing of the sliding idler gone.
As suggested, drain the oil and run a magnet through it.

Could be a chipped tooth on the idler. It may wear down with use since it is used only in reverse.

we just took the trans out and the counter shaft has a teeth gone that had to be the noise

Check its mating gear for damage, also.
