Post 396 Crank and 454 Block?

A shop advised they can build a 427 by using a 396 crank and a 454 block. A friend stated that the 396 crank is not properly balanced for this setup and advised to use a 427 crank vs. trying to balance a 396 crank. thoughts?

Your friend is wrong,a 454 crank is balanced externally because of the longer stroke and uses a different flywheel and harmonic balancer than all the other smaller big blocks,396,402,427.
Both the 396 and 427 are the same stroke, the 427 is just a bigger bore, they are balanced internally and use the same flywheel and balancer.
So yes you can use either a 396 or 427 crank in a 454 block to make a 427 and use the flywheel and balancer for a 396/427.

396/402 /427 crankshafts are the same ,just either cast or forged.
396 is 4.094 bore 3.76 stroke
402 is 4.125 bore 3.76 stroke.
427 is 4.250 bore 3.76 stroke.
454 is 4.250 bore 4.00 stroke.

Interesting. When I do a Google search on "396 crank with 454 block", I get more than one person stating that threre is a difference and many advise there is no difference. Intuitively, you would think there would be a slight difference in balancing to offset the added weight of 427 pistons (bigger means heavier). Maybe today's pistons are lighter than they were 40 years ago?
