1969 Camaro, Non-A/C to A/C?

What all would need to be replaced if a person were to take a 1969 Camaro that has no Air Conditioning, and convert it to a car with A/C?

A list of all the parts that would need replaced would be great.

I know the dash pad would need replaced to one "with A/C", but what else would need replaced that I dont know about?

I cant find any information on this subject anywhere else, so I figured that someone here would know a thing or two.

Thanks

No need to replace the dash pad, the pad is easily modified (an area is just cut out) and adapted for an AC vent attachment, these can be obtained from Classic Auto Air, Vintage Air etc, I am doing this conversion on my 69 now. Are you asking about gathering all original type equipment, compresssor, AC box, wiring harness etc for a correct 69 look or do you just want AC? If just AC, the kits are nice from several companies, or you can source parts and go on your own. You need compressor, mounts, redo mounts for alternator and/or PS, different pulleys for your system, evaporator, drier, AC and heater box, wiring, thermostat and safety switch for AC, adapter or hookup to your dash for fan, vent positions etc, new ducting from AC to your defroster, dash and side vents, cable and/or electric servo setup for air flow system, various AC hoses and redo heater hoses, AC fittings, then access to a vacuum pump for the system prior to charging or just take it to an AC shop once installed. You can download both Vintage Air and Classic Auto Air install manuals from the websites and see how it is done, much prepaation for a 69, removing old heater box is a bit of work etc. Clarify what you are planning on, what setup etc for more specific answers and good luck

Thanks Velox, thats pretty helpful. I was just curious because I couldnt find anything about it elsewhere, and was wanting to see the extent of what would need replaced and modified. Seems like it wouldnt be too bad if you just take your time and get all of the parts and pieces required beforehand.

Hey guys. New to the forum.

Anyways, I'm looking at putting a/c on my 68 build, but I MIGHT have it a little easier. I'm just trying to confirm that to make sure I dont run into any problems.

I am just going to put an everyday 350 in it, probably out of an already running and air conditioned vehicle. I dont have the original motor so I'm not going to worry about matching numbers or date code correct anything, etc. ALSO, I'm redoing the interior, and I had planned on buying the dash pad that is for a/c vehicles.

For me, could it really be as simple as dropping in that motor, a/c compressor and all, and hooking up everything accordingly? Any reason that wouldnt work? The only thing I wonder about is how I would actually control it from inside the car. As in, where would I get a compatible "head unit"(per say?) to just hook up to it and have the ability to start controlling temp and fan speed, etc?

You can probably tell I'm new to this kind of work. I know virtually nothing about a/c systems. I just want to find the cheapest and best route to have this taken care of buy whoever I take it to.

i dont think there is any differance in dash pads between an ac and non ac car in 68. i know there is adifferance in 69. you could look up a vintage air kit. they are really good for fitting a ac system into a non ac car.

I understand that they have good kits for that, and I also understand that they run over $1000 before installation. I'm wanting to drop in a motor out of say, an 80s tbi camaro that already has a/c(for the sake of an example) and be done with it. I'm trying to figure out if thats possible.

well you might be able to buy just the hosing to route it into the car and for outlets. if you are going for original locations you will need to add the vent that is in the middle of the dash in center trim piece that house the radio and ash tray. but you can buy aftermarket outlets and place them at the bottom of the dash.
