1968 SS Purchase Opportunity

All
New to the forum. I don't yet own a Camaro. I do have a 67 BB Corvette and 67 Chevelle SS396 both of which I restored. To my surprise my neighbor asked me if I had any interest in buying his 68 Camaro SS396. I never knew he had one. He's owned the car for 37 years. It hasn't run in 20 years. He indicated the car originally had the L78 396/375 engine. The engine had blown and he had a 327 put in it 25 years ago. He didn't keep any parts from the L78. I'm not yet sure if it's a Coupe or Convertible. My knowledge of Camaro's is very limited. I've not yet seen the car to evaluate options or condition. He did indicate he didn't have any factory documentation. He said he hadn't checked for a fuel tank sheet or broadcast sheet under the rear seat. Therefore, it may or may not be a former L78 car or even an original SS car. Before I look at the car and discuss price I'm trying to educate myself regarding what to look for. I could really use some help from 68 experts.
  1. I'll photograph the VIN & trim tag. However, I was told there are no codes on the 68 trim tag confirming it left the factory as an SS.
  2. Documentation. Is there a potential that there's a build sheet on the fuel tank or a broadcast sheet under the seat? Documentation would be key.
  3. Condition. I'll look at all the sheet metal and frame for rust. I'm in WI so rot is a real concern.
  4. Any special features indicating a former BB (fuel line, cross-members, sway bar, etc)?
  5. Expected price range for NOM car? I'll confirm the trans and rear numbers.
thanks
Dereck

One check if BBC was installed, open hood and look at the alignment of air cleaner stud to middle body ridge on cowl panel and header.
BBC's were offset to pass side about 3/4-1 inch.
Easy to set in a SBC with original frame mounts, as trans crossmember also allowed for pass side offset with trans.
Could still use the offset BBC fan shroud.
If SS model, look for an index size plate welded to drvr rear frame rail behind drvr rear wheel as this was the mounting point for the drvr side tailpipe hangar with dual exhaust.
Good luck.
If Norwood built, broadcast sheet may be in/on car.
If Van Nays built, no broadcast sheet, they throw them away.

Also check the radiator core width, the big blocks had a wider radiator core (23" at inner flanges), about 2" narrower for small block. Check the heater core tubes, big block cars have the tubes coming out of the middle of the heater core cover.
