1967 Manual Transmission

Hello-
I have a 1967 Camaro which I recently just got back on the road.

Since it has been a few years since she was running, I am looking to change the transmission fluid. It is a four speed manual. I have two questions:

1) How do I tell if the transmission is the original or a replacement? The engine is 350 from a 1980, so not original, but I believe the transmission is. How do I verify this?

2) If I can verify it is the original 4 speed, what type of oil does it take and how much?

Thank you
Ryan

First off have you decoded your Cowl tag to see if the car came with a 4 speed? Next step would to get under it and see the number, The trans should have a partial vin from your car. That's where the term "matching numbers" come from.

Camaro VIN, Cowl Tag, and other Numbers Decoding

Then the Partial Vin

Thank you for the reply.

The Cowl Tag option code is WD 2LG 3SL. I can not seem to decode that part based on the website. The other elements of the cowl code make sense.

I'll crawl under next weekend to see if I can find the transmission code.

I don't believe tag code will tell you OE trans, except M35, Powerglide, on the cowl tag.

As suggested, review camaros.org site for trans ID and its partial VIN.

67 cowl tags are concidered that last year to be accurate.

"2LG"

2 defines the section.

"L" M20 (or M21) 4-SPEED FLR SHIFT

"G" D55 CONSOLE FRT COMPT

Yeah they are, 68 tags are useless on information. 69 is cryptic but contains more info.

Yes they are, and so much for 68 being the "right year"! lol

the lubricant in the 4 speed can be straight 90 weight, 85 140, or synthetic of the above
to check the level, remove the pipe plug on the side of the transmission. stick your little finger in the hole to the first joint . if you can feel the gear oil it is full.
or just fill it till it runs out the hole
