1/2 full when empty?

That's why disconnecting and then grounding the gauge wire, to see what the gauge does, will help to determine if it's the sending unit, the gauge itself, or the wiring.

I think I traced it to stubing in right behind the license plate. The wire kind of disappears towards that general direction. I will go and try to make the ground connection and then clip the other wire and see what happens from there and report back...

OK, I got the ground connected properly, then I unplugged the tan wire at it's connection point inside of the trunk and the needle went to full...but in this case it went to about 3 O'Clock...well past its normal hash mark for full...same as it does now when I fill the tank up. Does that mean anything to you?

One more thing. With the tan wire pulled out of the plug the needle stays put until I turn the key and then it moves to the 3 o'clock position...as if it were going to read full if it didnt go way to far...well past the full hash mark.

I didn't realize you had posted again. With the key on, and the tan wire still connected, see what the gauge does when you disconnect it near the tank. Then, ground that tan wire (the gauge side, not the tank side) and see what the gauge does.

With the key on and the tan wire still connected the gauge reads almost half a tank by the hash marks...which means almost empty...when I disconnect it the gauge will go to the "full" position...all the way to the right...in this case well past the full mark to a 3 oclock position. Same position as if I were to have a full tank of gas. No effect when I ground the gauge side...it stays at the 3 oclock position. Any help?
