Busted Windshield

Busted Windshield
So I got on the highway yesterday behind a flatbed that was dropping rocks everywhere. I saw it and stayed back about 100 yards, but I had to still get around him. So I waited a minute or so hoping most of the crap fell off and then gunned it to get past as fast as I could. I saw the rock out of the corner of my eye but when I got to my appointment I didnt see any damage at all, until I lifted up the pass side wiper. The rock hit the wiper, but still starred the glass pretty good. It hit on the painted part of the glass, but there is a long crack coming up from under the painted part. The glass guys come today to see if it can be fixed, but I dont know since it has spread. It is still less than 6 inches, so maybe. I called the dealer and new glass is $600, but I have to go with the factory glass, not the generic replacment the insurance will try to give me.

You can go and pay a lot of money for factory glass, but IMO the replacement stuff is just as good. I used to live in LI, New York and I averaged a broken windshields a year, due to gravel falling off from 22 wheelers hauling aggregate from the local sand pits. I would just call the glass company, and they would come to my house or job site and replace the glass in about an hour. The last one was on a Chrysler 300M, with a huge front window, and the whole job came to $275, including tax & tip. I could never tell the difference between the replacements and the original.

Well my deductable is $250 no matter if the glass is 300 or 600, so I want to keep the factory stuff. The repair is done and the star looks okay, but the little stringing crack doesnt look like it was even touched. I think that one is either on the inside or in a middle layer.
When the Kia got busted up last year the replacment glass was $249, go figure.
Hopefully the repair will last through the winter at least, but I doubt it.

So the crack did end up spreading after the repair. I got the windshield replaced with the OEM glass. I went with that since I would have to pay the same deductable either way. The job was okay, but there is a small chip in the pillar now that was colored in with a black marker. I told them about it in the survey and will see what happens. I really cant complain though, they also replaced the wiper bolt cover which went missing the day before after washing it.

Nahh, over a year and a half and no door dings, I think I am lucky. The chip really isnt big enough to notice if it wasnt my car. They called today and said they would send someone out to inspect it and I told them it really wasnt that big a deal. Not that I dont care, but they did hook me up with the bolt cover. She said they would note it if I wanted to pursue anything later. So I am cool with that.

Well I dont know about that one, but since I only pay about $500 a year for the "full" coverage I think it probably works out.
I asked about the trucking company paying and the insurance said that it would be hard to prove that it wasnt just gravel coming off the road as opposed to something falling off the truck.
