Default What exhaust sounds do you like?

I think this belongs here since it isn't for suggestions/questions, it's just about your opinion.

What kind of exhaust note/sound do you like? I'm not asking what brand of muffler you're running, I'm asking: Do you like loud/quiet? Smooth/choppy? High/low pitched? etc., etc.

I ask because in a recent exhaust thread, someone said they wanted to smooth out what their exhaust sounds like when they're in park/neutral. (Camaro 69 then corrected him by telling him it's a 'rap' noise - IMO a good description)

If you would, kinda try to follow the same format as what I'm gonna do. I think it's a good layout.

IMO, the best exhaust note based on relative throttle positions is:

Idle:It's gotta be as deep a rumble as possible; Shake the earth apart deep. And it's gotta have that 'pa-rapp'-y / gurgle-ish noise to it. Kind of like on our stock lt1's (Sorry ls1's :P). Loud is okay, but with the windows up you should be able to talk in a normally-loud voice. Like if you know someone who always talks loudly, they'd be fine having a conversation in the car. Definitely semi-choppy, like a slightly more than mild cam.

Part throttle(1000-2500 rpms): In here is where we spend most of our time, so it's possibly most important. It's gotta keep the deep rumble, but smooth out that choppiness real quick. This is where you make a statement driving through the neighborhood. You don't need to wake everyone up with the volume, but they should 'feel' your exhaust note before they hear it. Like when those ricers with their 16" subs go through on full volume but better, since it's an angry V8 . It can keep the pa-rapp-y noise, but the gurgle has to go. That's an idle-only characteristic for me.

Majority to Full throttle(2500-respective shift point): It's gotta be loud. Sorry peeps, but the volume should be a noise related ticket demotivator :P. It's gotta be smooth here, but you don't want it to start to get high-pitched. I guess a good way to describe it would be 'airy', like, you can hear your engine forcing gobs of exhaust out the tailpipes. It's hard to describe the perfect WOT exhaust note...

Now your turn!

i like loud, low-choppy idle.. geep loud road from 1500-shift point...i got give a rats behind about if people think its too loud, but yes still be smooth...

in the ls7, ls9, and ls3 case, with a open exhaust thoes have a higher pitched blast of power...i love that to, but not to raspy...thos have a sound of there own, but still smooth, loud, roar at high rpm's but loud low choppy idles...

Well, I kinda prefer the raspy poppy sound. Something that's loud and noticeable. I know that's kinda tacky and not has high-class performance sounding, but it makes me smile so I like it.

I've been thinking about getting an SLP Loudmouth catback for my camaro for a long time. It has that raspy sound.

I like how drag racers sound - some of them just have cut-outs, or maybe just zoomies, so they have that really raspy and raw sound - that's what I like. I prefer that over the low-pitch bassy bellowy sound.

edit:
I also love the sound of a V8 with a big cam, so it gets that lopey idle. And with a raspy exhaust like I'm talking about, at idle, it sorta has a ticky sound - not valve ticks, but the exhaust kinda has a higher pitch sound to it, and less of a boomy timpani drum sound to it.

This is as good as it gets:

Refer to SpecterGT260's TA for awesome exhaust.

Best sounding car I have ever owned. The best engine I have ever heard was my '06 R6. At 17,000 rpms that thing was so mean! And that was with just the stock exhaust.

NO EXAUST SOUND IS COOL! Chicks don't like it either, we just cringe in fear when we hear that $hit driving down the road at 80mph. My parents have a 2007 volvo s60. Quiet as a mouse! Smooth as a sail!!!!!!!!!! Thats the way it should be! So huh!
