Oh man that's gotta smart! In rebuildable condition it's about a $5k engine, not to mention devaluing the car without it. Still talking to the parents?

The engine was at my parents since 1989 ,maybe I should not have left it there for 25 years. A little history on the Z; I bought the car in 1979 $2400.00 dollars , just a car. Back and forth to work. In 1989 the car needed some TLC from the years of abuse
replaced the motor and other things. The car was back on the road 1995 . Only drove once or twice a year and parked it in 2004 . Money going to more important things. I now have the time to work on it. The camaro now has about 87,000 miles on it, the new motor about about 1,000 miles on it. To me it is a nice z28. My youngest daughter went for a ride with me a couple days ago and liked it so much that I will make sure it is safe and reliable and when I am finished playing with it I will probably give it to her. I think that is enough rambling on for today

Is this a father/son project? A set of barbells is far cheaper and easier than adding power steering. lol
Seriously though, mine doesn't have p.s., and steering is only a slight effort for parallel parking, which is basically almost never. I prefer the simpleness of manual steering, and converting mine over to manual rack & pinion steering is on the wanted list. I spose once my daily regimen includes taking Geritol, I may have a different outlook.

No sons, just daughters. A house full of estrogen . I will put her on a weight lifting program but if she starts pouting I will look for the power steering kit.

Mine was converter to power steering using factory parts, just like the engine, keep the old parts. I have the complete manual box and drag links in storage, I would suggest not putting at your parents house, its less important now that the car is not number matching. Camaro 69 is right about the engine value but it would add 4 times that to the valve of the correct car. If you ever sell that car you parents little opps cost you 20K.

I also think I read about people using the close ratio 80's Monty SS steering box. I think it might be a direct bolt it.

new member-plate-001.jpgAttachment 9634 So now I know the car is worth a little money, at least more than what i have in it. I looked up on wikipedia and about 20,000 69 z28 were produced. So when did thE 69 become a classic ? Even when I playing with it in the early 90's it was nothing special. And this plate on the firewall identifies it as a z. Now you have me wondering how many are still around.

I think in 69 the plate call out X or something. It is very easy to make Z clones and nothing GM did is tuff to reproduce. An original matching number block is the hardest thing to clone. Also Z without the original motors are more common. These where sold as race cars and many had replacement motors in the early 70's. The cloning is so bad there is more number matching fully documented 69 Z today then there was in 1979, and all that implies. In fact if you want the big money for your rare numbers matching car you need to have the history of the car back to the original owner. Correct age picture with the original owner when the car was new is a great plus. I saw one guy who displayed a ticked he found in the glove box form 1969 the Cop had wrote Z28 on it.

The cars where still reasonable in 1998. I paid $6500 for the RS/SS rag top (not matching engine) in the below pic. After 2000 it started going nuts and reached its height in 2007. In 2007 my 67 was worth about 25-30k now it more 18-20K. A matching numbers Z28 from a well known restoration place could go 60-80K in 07. Rare matching numbers cars have not fallen as far as the non matching ones.
