Default Code 22 & Shifting problems

While driving the other day I noticed that at about 50mph the Z seemed to be going in and out of overdrive a lot and after watching the tach jump back and forth between 1400 and 2200 rpm I knew something wasn't right.

Before I got home the ses light came on went off and came on a second time . When I got home and pulled the codes it said I had 2 codes but both showed up code 22

I bought a new tps and installed it but still no change. The new tps shows .86v at idle and 1.38 at about 3500rpm. This is sitting still under no load. Does this sound right? I haven't had the chance to drive down the road and get any readings yet. The car is still not shifting right, could the tps be causing this or do I need to be looking elsewhere to fix that problem?

Thank you and yes I have seen the how-to. I have adjusted the tps to the recommended voltage. Have also drove the car and verified that I am getting 4.68v at wot.

I do not know if the old tps was bad or not. Never tested it. I also know that if you try to go wot from a dead stop that the car wants to cough, spit, sputter, and fall on it's face for a couple seconds then will take off like a bat outta hell. Also if you are moving in the least when you crack the throttle the car doesn't hesitate at all just eats up the road.

Needless to say changing and setting the tps has done nothing to remedy the shifting problem that showed up about the same time as the code 22. It seems to shift out fine until I reach cruising speed then starts going back and forth between od and 3rd gear.

Obliviously I have more than one problem going on here and may need to separate them to come up with a good troubleshooting plan.

The shifting problem is what I am most concerned about at the moment so if anyone has any ideas on what to check or test please let me know.

Have you checked your transmission fluid? Do you know when the transmission was last serviced?

The trans was rebuilt a couple thousand miles before I got the car. There was paperwork for that. The fluid checks out fine.

I guess I need a little more info on this lockup engaging thing to know whether that is what's happening or not. All I know is the car shifts out fine until I get up to cruising speed then feels like it goes back and forth between od and third gear. The rpm's jump back and forth between about 1600 and 2200 . As long as I am in the gas everything seems normal, at cruising speed something is kicking in and out

Just because the transmission was rebuilt doesn't necessarily mean that they did everything correctly. They could have used inferior parts, or left something out or installed incorrectly.

Of course, they also could have done everything perfectly and used OEM parts and something is just a little out of whack.

But, I suspect that what you are experiencing is the torque converter lockup engaging and disengaging. There is around a 500 rpm difference in 4th gear between non-lockup and lockup with my '94. At 60 mph I am running right around 2000 rpms before the converter lockup engages and around 1500 after it engages.

What is your cruising speed? 60 mph, 70 mph? When you are cruising, are you using the cruise control and keeping your right foot off the pedal? If you increase or decrease the cruise speed, does the issue go away?

Grandapaswagon, You hit the nail square on the head. There were inferior parts in the mix. My eyes! I hadn't had any problems up to this point out of the trans but rechecking the fluid per your suggestion revealed that it was indeed low and after toping it off it shifted out fine.

I guess it's a good thing I'm still in the stages of getting the car back up to being a daily driver. At this point I'm only driving the thing 20 to 30 mi. round trip and trying to work out issues before the next trip. Maybe I didn't do much damage running it low of fluid.

Thank you guys for all your help. Now on to my next post.
