no matter what its a good idea to change springs and retainers. even with the lt4 cam. cam is not going to do much without doing the heads. have a look at what lloyd has at elliotts port works. http://elliottsportworks.com i have the le2 heads with the max emissions cam.

What do you want out of the car and what is your budget? Be idealistic about goals. I have known a lot of guys that have said the want as much power as possible and they end up with a car that runs great at the track and sucks to drive at normal speeds. Last guy I helped end up re-caming his car a year later and gave up 95 HP but now he loves to drive his car again.

These are the first questions and customer support center will ask you weather you call Crane, Texas speed or Elliott or any decent parts manufacturer.

I quoted Gorn but left the 2 biggest points as they are the most impoirtant and absolutely go hand-in-hand

Also, point #1 from Gorn is not as simple as ............. "I want 400 RWHP"

maybe you only want a little more accelleration and only do around town driving and economy is not a concern, so rear gear ratio might be the trick

maybe you plan on taking it off of the street and making it a track only car, will it be 1/8 or 1/4 mile

or, do you want more torque, more HP, the ability to drive on the street, cruise for distances on the highway without running at 3500 rpm, sacrifice nothing in economy, run all day long with a smoothe idle and the AC cranking in the summer etc

you need to clearly identify your desires, honeestly assess how much $$$ you can commit and in what period of time and then determine if that car can even meet those requirements even after spending the $$$$

Only you know what your true desires/needs are and once you clearly identify, then folks here can provide guidance with to respec to what is needed to get there and then you can get pricing and figure out if you have the budget

good luck as there is satisfaction in doing things yourself and enjoying the end result

I have been told that just porting polishing the heads alone should give you about 40hp,alot of guys are looking for more all around power ,hp tlbs, the lt1 there was chip that only the police could get gave the car 50hp headers an they used them for chace cars ,back then is was like $400.00 now I think you can get them from the right place for $200.00 ,so many places ,sell different chips

Just a FYI, Polishing and gasket matching heads/intakes increase the efficiency of the motor. You are removing manufacturing defect that are too costly to do on a high production car. It is an across the board gain with fuel injection. With a carb the turbulence that is caused by the defects can help mix the fuel better. Even with a carb it will increase HP but may cause some idle issues.

Porting on the other hand is a redesign similar to replacing a cam. It can gain you HP at the top end of the range but cost you hp at the lower RPMs. You want your port job to match your cam. Over porting can cost you HP. This is why buying match heads and cam from the same guys give you the most predictable engine.
