Default 4l60e to turbo 400/turbo 350

what is the benifit of switching out a 4l60e to a turbo 350 or a turbo 400? i just found out that my 4l60e is bad and i was wondering what the rewards/consequences of switching the trans would be on my 95 z28

That would be a mistake. while the TH350 and 400 are bullet proof trannys for the most part, they are slow as *****. If your looking for an automatic go with a 700r its the best auto with overdrive.

A little info on the trans: the 700 R4 was used from 1982-89. Then came the 4L60 (1990-92), which is just a 700 R4 by a different name. Then the 4L60-E (electronic shift) starting in 1992. The disadvantages of putting in a 350 or 400 would be the loss of overdrive, and a higher first gear, plus they are shorter in length so you would need a longer driveshaft. You would also have to re-work your crossmember/trans mount, and would also need to buy a remote mount for your torque arm. And then not to mention, your computer will probably be confused then because it will be looking for a signal from your electronic trans that isn't there. I would just try to find a replacement for what you have, or get yours rebuilt, because I think you will end up spending just as much to get the 350 or 400 to work, and will end up missing out on the benefits of an overdrive.

hmm.. didnt kno the 700 was basically the same.. so with a stock camarowith a stocktranny could you get a higher gear ratio and beat stock 6spds? Would it be that easier? Would you need to get stalls and stuff like that.

I don't quite follow what you're asking Spartan. You're referring to a higher gear (top end) to beat stock 6 speeds? Sure it will at high speeds, but it would be more of a slug off the line, and the 6 speed car will already be waiting for you at the next light! Leaving everything else the same, to gain top end with gearing will lose you some in the bottom end, and vice-versa. A stall converter brings your engine up to a desireable rpm based on the engine's h.p. power band before it engages. Choosing the right stall speed depends on how the engine is built.

I would just like to note that the 93 Camaro had the 4L60 and not the 4L60E just to avoid confusion for people reading this in the future. 94+ had the 4L60E, the poor '93 is the black-sheep of the 4th gens[>:]

Ok say my car was stock.. or i knew what the heck the previous guy did to it for sure.. and i had a stock 4L60E and I wanted to be faster than a stockLT1 Camaro with a 6spd. What exactly would i need to do to beat astock 6spd? Gears? what?

Jeez Spartan, you're determined to break your car for real aren't you? If everything is identical, and the only difference is the transmissions, then the 6 speed is gonna get a good jump on you. The 6 speed will have a lower 1st gear, and it has 2 more gears to play with than the auto has. However, (and correct me if I'm wrong) the final drive ratio would be the same between the two. What you can do is: put in lower rear gears, a higher stall converter, and a shift kit. Even lower profile tires will contribute to your bottom end performance. If you don't have it, I have formulas where you can play with the tire diameter/gearing/present rpm's numbers to determine what changing your gearing or tires would give you. The die-hard manual shift gearheads here might argue, but if you set up your trans and gearing right, you'll certainly be able to beat the 6 speeds. Your opponent would have to shift perfectly to give you a good run. He will be able to take you over on the top end though since you would have a lower gear ratio, but 0-60 is where the money is at! ANYBODY can drive their car fast....but it's how quickly you get there that counts!!

Yeah... Ive got to sell my Camaro before the snow comes back (and it will) because i live up in the foothills area so we get the heaviest of the snow... I gotta get a cheap jeep until summer, but im saving up for a 98-02 T/A WS6.. that is 100% stock preferably..

Just thought I'd toss in some corrections. The 4L60E in the Camaro has a lower first gear than the 6 speed, if you do the calculations even taking into account the difference between the 3.23 and the 3.42 stock rear-ends the auto has a slight performance advantage. In a 1/4 mile the cars are pretty evenly matched, the 6 speed will trap at a higher speed because it can catch up, but the auto will have it off the line and through 1st. If you get lower rear end gears and a higher stall converter you'll walk on stock M6's all day at the track.
