Default 1996 Camaro Exhaust

I have a 1996 Camaro with the LT1. It is basically stock except for the stereo system which i completely replaced with competition speakers and added subs, and it has Corvette rims on it. I have been wanting to replace the exhaust for a better sound, but i am not sure what i want to do. If i replace the muffler can i leave the old pipes? or is it better to go with a cat-back system? Also any brands to stay away from or look into? Looking for a good muscle sound.

any help is appreciated, Thanks

yes you can replace the muffler only if you wish. best for performance and sound to go with cat back. i like my corsa but its pretty spendy. flowmaster or magnaflow will work. google and you should see a bunch of recordings.

What about some straight pipes, with no muffler? Will i still get the same deep sound? I will look on youtube also, but its good to have other opinions.

straight pipe is too much. its great for about 1 day. gets old fast. i think borla still makes a good muffler that will work.

youtube will be your best friend here. it helped me when i was trying to decide what i wanted. but when i first bought mine it had a flowmaster on it with the original pipes. it makes a good tone but only during throttle to me. and i did go straight pipe for alittle while, and i agree with craby, to much.

I put a t-pipe (muffler eliminator) on my 96, then used resonated tips. Sounded awesome when the pedal went down, yet quiet in the car when cruising.
Cost me a lot less than what those spendy exhausts cost.

SLP PowerFLo sounds great (same as the SS), and Borla Adjustable cat-back is great too and gives you plates to adjust the sound or you can insert an electric diverter for control from the cockpit.

For deeper sounds start thinking LT Headers & cated y-pipe... If you want loud at the tweak of a button from your sea, then add an electric diverter to your intermediate pipe.

I have the louder version of the SLP loudmouths on mine (cant remember if its the lm1 or 2) and i like it. Its pretty loud at heavy throttle and not to bad while cruising. I get a lot of compliments on the exhaust and people think my car has headers when in reality all it has is the catback lol
