Default Power Lock Probem?

I just bought a 1998 Camaro today. When I try to unlock the doors from either door switch(drivers side or pssangers side) all I hear is a click under the dash. They dont unlock. But they do lock. If I use my remote they work (lock and unlock). If I try to lock using the door switches when the doors open and the key is installed I hear a chime(4 dings). And they dont lock. Is this an after market device that does not alow you to accedently lock your door with the key in it, if so why does it not let you unlock the door at all with the doors switches? The dealer I bought the car from has no clue.

If your keys are in the ignition the doors will not lock with the motor off.
if the motor is off and the keys are out of the ignition it still doesnt unlock.

Do I have this right?

I figured that might be a safty feature, but I am not sure why I cant use the door switch to unlock. I kn ow the mechnism works because it unlocks with the remote. I know the switch works because it makes a click under the dash(same place where it ding when I try to lock with key in) when I push it.

sounds to me like whoever installed the aftermarket alarm wired it wrong.
They crossed one of the wires and you are getting a negative pulse when trying to lock or unlock from inside the car.
You can try to disconnect the brain of the alarm from the wiring harness and see if you can lock and unlock the doors from inside the car. If you can then you know they wired it wrong.
